ELECTION OF MAYOR MR J. J. MARLOW RETURNED MR J. A. CARMAN ELECTED TO COUNCIL The St. Kilda Borough by-elections held yesterday for the purpose of filling the mayoral vacancy caused by the death of Mr H. H. Leary and of electing a councillor to replace Mr A. D. Edgar,, who resigned three weeks ago, resulted in the election of Mr J. J. Marlow as Mayor of the borough and Mr J. A. Carman as the new member of the council. Chiefly on account of the heavy rain throughout the day, onlv about one-third of the electors of the borough recorded their votes, 1629 of the 5018 residents eligible exercising their rights. Not a great deal of public interest was shown
in the elections, however, and there were only about 80 people at the council chambers to hear the results announced last night. . CANDIDATES’ SPEECHES Thanking the electors for the confidence they had shown in him, Mr Marlow said that the best way he could show his gratitude to them was to use every endeavour to iustifv that confidence. He expressed hia thanks to every ratepayer who had voted that day as they had shown great public spirit to brave the adverse weather conditions. _ . .. Mr Robinson and Mr Longworth both thanked the electors who had cast their votes, and congratulated Mr Marlow on his election. Mr Carman also returned thanks for his election to the council, and Mr Lunam briefly congratulated the successful candidate. , , .. A vote of thanks was accorded the returning officer (Mr J. V. Trezise).
