MODERN BATTLESHIPS

VIRTUALLY BOMB-PROOF TESTS WITH AIRCRAFT LONDON, March 7. (Received March 8, at 10 p.m.) Mr Hector Bywater, in the Daily Telegraph, says experiments have convinced the Admiralty that aircraft have not greatly endangered the modern battleship. ' Tests, which involved explosions of numerous bombs above and below water, proved that even a heavy bomb; highly charged with explosives, damaged! the superstructure surprisingly little, while " near hits" under water, which enthusiastic air partisans claimed would be fatal to even big ships, were also ineffective. The American Navy carried out similar experiments with similar results, which, according to an American delegate to the Naval Conference, led America to retain battleships as the backbone of the fleet. Mr Bywater adds: "British battleships which will be laid down in 1937 will be virtually bombproof."
