OBITUARY

LORD LANSDOWNE (United Press Association.) (By Electric Telegraph—CoDyrlghi.) LONDON, March 6. The death is announced of Lord Lansdowne. Lieutenant-colonel Henry William Edmund Petty-Fitzmaurice, D. 5.0., became sixth Marquess of Lansdowne on the death of his father, the fifth Marquess, in 1927. He served in the South African War and was mentioned in despatches. He sat in the House of Commons for 10 years, was a member of tile London County Council, and a Senator in the Irish Free State from 1922 to 1929. He was a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries, and was the author of several books bearing on historical subjects. Lord Lansdowne was G2 years of age. MR D. C. BETTS The death occurred at Cromwell Hospital on Friday evening of Mr David Charles Betts, a well-known and widelyrespected figure in the public life of the district. Mr Betts was born in Ipswich, Queensland, in 1885, and at the age of seven years came to New Zealand with his parents, who settled at Luggate. The family later removed to Cromwell, where Mr Betts received his schooling. On leaving school he was apprenticed to the carpentering trade, and eventually opened up business on his own account. For many years he was a member of the Cromwell Borough Council, and he was also a keen supporter of the Cromwell Band. He is survived by his wife and a family of eight. MR G. E. RHODES (Per United Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, March 8. The death occurred early this morning after a long illness of Mr George Edward Rhodes, 0.8. E., brother of Sir R. Heaton Rhodes. He was 69 years old. He was for many years well-known in the Ellesmerc district as a breeder of Southdown sheep, Clydesdale horses, and Berkshire pigs. He was educated at Christ's College and at Oxford University, where he rowed for his college, Brascnose, and was ninth man for the university eight. During the Great War he took an active interest in Red Cross work.
