ACTIVITIES OF THE DISTRICT

(FROM OUR SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT.)

VALEDICTORY

LAWN TENNIS

MISS BETTY BUTTERFIELD Miss Betty Butterfield, who will lcve Oamaru this week for Palmerston North, will be greatly missed from the dramatic and musical circles of "the town, as 1 for some time past she has taken a very prominent part in productions staged by the Oamaru Operatic Society and the Peter Pan Drama Club. '•'. Miss Butterfield took the title role in " The Belle of New York" in the .presentation of that opera by the Operatic Society a few years ago, and she has also been prominent in the musical and dramatic presentations at the North Otago Women's Club. She is a member of the Columba Presbyterian Church Choir, and at the conclusion of the weekly practice the members took the opportunity of bidding her farewell. The Rev. W. Lawson Marsh, making her a presentation of a pearl necklace, spoke of Miss Butterfield's association with the church and of her enthusiasm and work in the various organisations of which she was a member. He expressed regret at her departure from Oamaru, and conveyed to her all good wishes for her future happiness in the north. Members of the choir joined with Mr Marsh in good wishes to Miss Butterj field, who, in acknowledging the gift, saia she had had a very happy time during her association with the choir, and would always cherish peasant memories of her stay in Oamaru. GOLF A Fourball Eclectic Match was played on Saturday at the Awamoa links, and, though the weather conditions became so unfavourable in the early afternoon, most of the players completed the round, and, played for" the first time in Oamaru, the match proved quite satisfactory. The best cards returned were as follows: Pvalph Hedges and Kinder, 79 —12—67: Millar and Fraser, 88—20—68; Catto and Milnes, 78—9—09: M'Kenzie and Scott, 79—7—72; M'Beath and Holmes, 83—8— 75; G. and S. Cuthbertson, 82—5—77: M'Dowell and Nicholls, 88—11—77.

OTAGO BEATS NORTH OTAGO The annual representative lawn tennis match between Otago and North Otago was played at the Awamoa courts on Saturday, resulting in a win for the visitors .by 14 matches to nine. Perfect weather conditions, prevailed for the commencement of the games, and continued until the early afternoon, when a sudden change fr'cSm the south with intermittent rain in this Ipcality and a strong gusty wind made conditions very unpleasant for players and spectators alike. The games, however, were put through in good time, and the fine standard of play, considering the adverse weather, was very creditable to those taking part and greatly enjoyed by the onlookers. In the Men's Singles, Otago won four of the six games, Feathers and M'Kenzie being the Only local representatives to secure wins. Feathers defeated Rawlinson in a three-set encounter. M'Dougall secured the first set from Bryan, who, however, showed his superiority by winning the next two sets with the loss of only one game. Pearce and O'Malley fought out a strenuous match, but the Otago man prevailed in the final set, to win 6 —2, his superior placements being the deciding factor. M'Kenzie, the other local player to win, defeated Kaye in straight sets. J. Walton, in hia first representative match, lost to Swallow in a very closely-contested match. Honours were evenly divided in the Ladies' Singles. Miss-Miller proved much too strong for Miss Pattison, who managed to secure only one game. The North Otago champion showed all-round superiority, and at no time appeared to be troubled. Miss Donaldson and Mrs Morrison had a lons duel in the decidiug set, which went to 13—11 in Miss Donaldson'** fsvour. Miss Downing, the other successful North Otago player, had a comparatively easy win over Miss Howison in straight sets. For Otago, Miss Barton beat Miss Romans by the odd set, and Miss Jolly met with similar success against Miss Nicolls. Mrs Rawlinson (nee Miss Baikie, of Waimate), however, disposed of | her opponent, Mrs Bradley, in straight sets.

A surprise of the match was the defeat of Bryan and Pearco by M'Dougall ana Feathers in the Men's Doubles, the North Otago pair playing very consistently to win the final set 9—7. This game in particular was productive of a high standard of tennis, and the sparkling rallies delighted the crowd. Otago won the other two Doubles in straight sets. The Ladies' Doubles between Misses Miller and Romans and Misses Patterson and Barton was unfinished, each pair taking a set, and the third being 1 up in Otago's favour, when play ceased owing to the bad light. The other games wen; evenly divided, Mesdames Rawlinson and Morrison winning for Otago, and Misses Nicolls and Downing for North Otago. Otago won four of the Mixed Doubles, the only game to go to the third set being that in which Kaye and Mrs Morrison defeated M'Kenzie and Miss Nicolls. Walton and Miss Downing won their' match for North Otago by the odd set, but M'Dougall and Miss Miller beat Pearce and Miss Barton in straight sets, the second going to 11—9. At the conclusion of the match the visitors were the guests of the local association at dinner, after which they were entertained at the Majestic Theatre. WINTRY CONDITIONS Following on the beautifully fine summer conditions of last week, a sudden chance to cold, wintry weather took place early on Saturday afternoon, making the playing of outdoor sports unpleasant, though fortunately not sufficient rain fell to stop play. Heavy black clouds spread over the sky from the south, accompanied by strong, gusty winds, but worked inland to the mountains, and bowls, golf, lawn tennis and cricket were continued throughout the afternoon. At night heavy rain fell and the atmosphere became cold, making things very disagreeable for competitors and spectators at the swimming carnival. Up to i) o'clock yesterday morniii" 25 points of raiu were recorded by Mr W. Forrester at Oamaru, and yesterday morning heavy showers again fell, making another 25 points of rain up to 1 o'clock, or a total of 50 points.
