A NEW ZEALANDER'S SUCCESS

DOCTORATE FOR MR P. S. CABOT Word has been received that Mr P. S. de Q. Cabot, who had an outstanding carrer at Otago University and is well known to the sporting public, has been awarded the degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Harvard University, Cambridge, U.S.A. Educated in the primary schools of Central Otago and South Canterbury, Dr Cabot matriculated from the Timaru Boya' High School and graduated B.A. from the University of Otago in 1925. He gained the M.A. degree. the following year, at the same time completing the Diploma in Education. While a student at the Dunedin Training College, he obtained special mention and excellent commendation in the theory and practice of teaching, psychology and botany. In 1930 he completed the Diploma of Social Science and in that year was the first New Zealander to be awarded a Carnegie Foundation fellowship for the study of education abroad. At the end of the spring session in 1931 Dr Cabot obtained the

B.A. degree in educational psychology from Columbia University. He was awarded a Faculty scholarship by Harvard University and after teaching in the Park School of Buffalo, New York, obtained the M.A. degree at Harvard last year. At the same time he was awarded a research grant by the Medical Council of the Rockefeller Foundation to carry out an investigation of the personality development of adolescents. At present he is lecturer in psychology at Simmons College and. with Dr Richard Cabot, of Cambridge, is a director of a research study of the behaviour of pre-dclinqueiit children —a project that has important and far reaching social implications. Dr Cabot has published many reviews and articles on education and psychology in England, New Zealand, America and South Africa. He has had extensive teaching experience in New Zealand and the States. He was a member of the staffs of the Timaru and Otago Boys' High Schools for about 10 years. He represented New Zealand at th<i Denver mc'.'ting of the World Federation of Educational Associations in 1031. While a member of International House in New York City he was chairman of the Education Committee. DuriDg the past two summers he has

been prominently comweted with one of the country's outstanding children's camps as psychologist and adviser. As a student at Otago University, Dr Cabot was president of the Students' Association for three successive years in which period his administration carried out many reforms. With Mr F. M. Hanau, of this city, he was a founder and the first president of the New Zealand National Union of Students now known as the New Zealand University Students' Association. He was also president of the Training College Students' Association, captain of the University Rugby Club, president of the University Cricket Club and a delegate and manager of the University tournament teams and a member of the Logan Park Committee for eight years. He was also prominent in the Territorial Forces, holding the rank of captain. He has had a noteworthy athletic record. While at the Timaru Boys' High School lie captained the school fifteen and represented South Canterbury on many occasions, first gaining representative honours when only 17 years old. Owing to his studies and teaching duties he was often unavailable for important games and tours, but he represented Otago and the South Island and won All Black reoog-

nition, playing for New Zealand in his first year at the University. He toured Australia with the New Zealand University team and won his N.Z.U. Rugby blue in 1921, 1922 and 1925. From 1921 to 192(5 he was a prominent wingforward iu the Otago Varsity A team, captaining it in the last year. In 1030 he was a member of the New York Rugby Club and later captained the Harvard University Rugby team. He has coached the Harvard teams for the past few years. Two years ago he was the founder of the Eastern Rugby Union of America and has been elected president of that body for the second year in succession. Dr Cabot, whose parents reside in Dunedin, is a brother of Mr G. S. Cabot, a mining engineer in Australia, and of Mr R. H. Cabot, now living in Hamilton, both of whom have won New Zealand honours as athletes. During his stay in America Dr Cabot married Miss Isabel S. Boyd, eldest daughter of Dr William Boyd, of Glasgow University, an eminent Scottish educator.
