SEISMIC UPHEAVAL

ISLANDS SOUTH OF NEW ZEALAND SHOCKS OF GREAT DURATION (Special to Daily Times) CHRISTCHURCH, March 6. Two big earthquakes, probably two of the most severe ever recorded in the Dominion, have shaken the islands several hundred miles south of New Zealand. Records taken on the seismographs at the Christchurch magnetic observatory show that the disturbances lasted for an exceptionally long period and were probably as big as the earthquake at Hawlce'e Bay in 1931. Mr H. F. Baird, of the Observatory, said to-day that the two shocks appeared from the extent of their motion and their duration to be comparable with the Hawke's Bay disturbance. Their origins apparently were several hundreds of miles south of Stewart Island. Activity about the Macquarie Islands was fairly severe some years ago, but it appeared' that these recent disturbances were' considerably nearer New Zealand. Mr Baird added that one of the most severe earthquakes ever felt in New Zealand since its settlement by Europeans was recorded in the south-west of the South Island about 1829.
