THE HEALTH OF THE PEOPLE
' TO THE EDITOR Sir, —Allow me to compliment W. W. Wilson and " C. H." on the very sensible letters which have appeared lately on the subject of cajneer. It is becoming known, half a century too late, that not only cancer, *nt all other diseases, are the natural result of unnatural living, and there is no serious attempt to remedy the evil. Jt is rare indeed to find a medical man with the intelligence and the honesty to strike at the root cause of all our troubles as has been done by Sir Arbuthnot Lane and Dr Ulric Williams. The leading dentists have done something, by slating at their conference that our rotten teeth and diseased gums are unquestionably the result of our universal custom ot living on soft, over-refined foods. It is greatly to their credit, and that close corporation, the British Medical Association might very well follow their lead. It is a pitiful state of affairs, and the carelessness and apathy of the public is amazing. There is all the more need tor a change in our methods as the land in this country is being robbed, year after vear, of its minerals, and the produce from that land consequently becoming, less nutritious and more and more lacking in mineral salts and lime. The craze ot civilised peoples for foods which, in their ultra-fine, dead-white condition look nice" has caused industrialists to cater for "that desire until at the present tune millions of money are sunk in elaborate mills and factories, the use of which enriches shareholders, no doubt, but_ saps the strength of the nation. I question it there is Imy greater evil in the world today and it would be interesting if those of your correspondents who insist that all the meat events of the present day arc plainlv foretold in the Bible, would give us chapter and verse for this abomination. What does Revelations say about -it?—l am. etc., I VON A. BoRTON. . Palmers-ton. March 4.
