ENGLAND'S NATIONAL GAME
N'cw Zcalanders with only a superficial knowledge of sport in England are apt to consider England's national name of Association football as largely a professional one. Figures demonstratinc the falsity of this idea as well as the enormous popularity of the round-ball game in the Old Country were contained in a letter received from Mr S. F. Rous, secretary of the English Football Association, by the council of the New Zealand Football Association at its meeting recently. There were registered with the English Football Association, said Mr Rous, annroximately 5000 professional players, and there were about 750,000 amateur players who were members of the association's affiliated clubs. There were roughly 400 clubs which enlaced professionals, and 40,000 amateur clubs. And these figures do not include Scotland.
