CRICKET

THE PLUNKET SHIELD OTAGO BEATS CANTERBURY MARGIN OF 119 RUNS (Per United Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, February 18. Otago won the Plunket Shield match to-day by 119 runs. The wicket was such that the batsmen lacked confidence in playing certain strokes, but the state of the wicket did not provide an adequate excuse for some of the failures. Canterbury had the worst of the luck in the match. Otago played its second innings on an easy wicket on Saturday. The rain at the week-end and on Monday permitted of only an hour's play on that day, and both the light and the turf were unfavourable to-day. The major failure of the side, however, was in the bowling. The side missed Roberts sorely. To-day the only bright spot in Canterbury's batting display was Hadlee's fine innings. He went for the bowling with determination and confidence, and deserved his century. He gave an easy chance to Elmes at first slip after he had scored 90, but that was his first and only chance. Page was a surprised man when he went out leg before soon after play resumed. He deliberately stopped a ball from Dunning with his pads, and was out.

Cobden gave a chance in the slips before skying a ball from Badeock. O'Brien played his usual steady knock. He was one of the few batsmen to do well in both innings.

The tail-enders need no comment. Lester was the only one to shape like a representative batsman. The Qtago bowling was much better than Canterbury's, but should not have been difficult to a good batting side. Badcock kept a perfect length, and caused all the batsmen trouble. He was unlucky not to get more wickets. Dunning and Silver were made more difficult because their deliveries kicked badly. Elmes wrought havoc among the tail-enders. The Otago fielding throughout the match was rather better than the home side's, but the fielding of neither side was really good. * Scores:— OTAGO. First innings 17$ Second innings 350 CANTERBURY. M.C.C. TEAM'S TOUR

GAME AT MATAMATA RAIN STOPS PLAY (Peb United Press Association) HAMILTON, February 18. Heavy rain set in shortly after the luncheon adjournment and caused a postponement in the game, M.C.C. v. Pinko, at Matamata to-day. The wicket was inspected at 3 o'clock, and an hour later it was announced that play would be abandoned for the day. , Providing the weather conditions permit, the match will be resumed to-morrow. At the close of play to-day Piako had lost seven wickets for 100. , Walters (North Shore/ and Kerr (Auckland left-hander) opened the home innings. Walters did not survive long. Playing a weak shot from a kicking ball from Head, he was taken by Holmes for five. Ferguson, who followed, was out leg before after scoring a couple of singles. Hay joined Kerr and stopped the rot. Read was replaced by Holmes, and the latter soon broke the partnership, Kerr cutting a low ball to Parks in .the slips. Kerr had contributed a useful 15.

With the total at 34 Dunning came on to partner Hay, but he was soon back in the pavilion, succumbing to a leg-before appeal off the first ball he received. With Sneddon partnering him. Hay brought up the half century after 51 minutes' play, but in stepping out to a low ball it hit his pads, to be deflected on to his wickets. Clough filled the breach and ran into double figures with forceful shots all round the wicket. Both batsmen were playing confidently, but they experienced several lives. The century was hoisted 10 minutes before lunch. Human, who replaced Langridge. had Clough caught off his third ball. . Skeet survived a confident leg-before appeal, but went a couple of balls later. The luncheon adjournment was then taken. Scores: — PIAKO. First Innings. C. F. Walters, c Holmes, b Bead .. 5 C. Kerr, c Parks, b Holmea .. . • 15 S. Ferguson, lbw, b Parks 2 S. C. Hay, b Sims 21 E.
