PERSONAL AND SOCIAL

Miss Leah Dalziel, who has been spending a few days in Dunedin, returned yesterday to Oamaru.

The first public concert of the Dunedin j Choral Society Madrigal Club took place before a large audience in the Town Hall Concert Chamber last evening. Praise of the songs chosen and of the way they were sung is given in another part of this newspaper. Here, what is to be recorded is the excellent appearance of the stage, the choir, and the soloists. The stage in the concert hall is. not easy to decorate on account of the richness of its amber-coloured curtains, but last evening, by means of a clever arrangement of greenery, red lilies, -and blue hydrangeas, with a chair containing a green cushion in the foreground, an unexpectedly artistic effect was gained and gave pleasure to the eye during the whole concert. Added artistry was displayed in the drawing of the curtain after each item, so that the audience was spared the sight of the club members making their exits and their entrances; and the dependence of the choir on its own memory, rather than on book's of music. Had he been present, the patron of the club (Mr Percy Grainger) would have been greatly gratified. Against this background, with a grand piano in the foreground, the club members made a pleasing picture, the men standing at the back and the women, in vari-coloured evening dress, in front of them. Regarding the individual soloists and their accompanists, Miss Mary Pratt wore apricot lace, Miss Ethel Wallace white organdie muslin checked in (?old, Madame Winnie Praser sea green ninon with old gold panels floating from the shoulder, Miss Adelaide Cameron buttercup lace with black relief, Mrs Arthur Macdonald henna rippled velvet, Miss Hannah Dick coral pink and silver georgette, Mrs H. C. Campbell Burgundy red ring velvet, and Mrs Ernest Drake rose ninon and silver.
