THE “Inveniam viam aut faciam.” DUNEDIN, FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 17, 1805.

SEVENTY-ONE YEARS AGO.

Yesterday was the first “ Shilling Day ” proper at the Exhibition; and the visitors numbered between 300 and 400, so that more money was received at the doors than on any of the half-crown days, Saturdays excepted. To-day the charge will be half-a-crown, and to-morrow ss, in consequence of the concert to be given by the Lyster Opera Company and the orchestra. . . .

The bank of Otago is about to be erected on its old site, in Princes street; the work has already been commenced towards covering with a brick building, the site of the front part of the Exchange Hotel, in which the fire that destroyed the Bank and so many other premises commenced.

The Aylmer Race Company, Skipper’s Gully, have lately had a profitable washing up, and are said to have realised 100 ounces for eight days’ work for ten men.

We give the following on the authority of the “Waikouaiti Herald”: —“It affords us unfeigned pleasure to be able to announce that the project of re-estab-lishing steam communication between Waikouaiti and Dunedin is now in a fair way of being carried into .effect. We think it at present unnecessary to mention names, but we may state that a Prospectus of the Waikouaiti Steam Navigation Company has been in private circulation during the past week, and, we are informed, has been regarded with quite an unexpected degree of favor. Should this company be able to carry out their scheme, we understand their vessel could be plying within the two ports in a’ fortnight. Other parties, we may mention, are likewise taking steps in the matter, , r so that, if one cannot, another may succeed. We should prefer much to see the working of the concern in the hands of parties connected with the township, but in any case we hope it will be started under efficient management. A suitable steamer, in the hands of an enterprising company, cannot fail to be a lucrative concern, besides conferring vast benefits on the township and district generally.” The Perseverance Company at Moonlight Flat are understood to be doing exceedingly well. They are sluicing on a large scale, and from one terrace claim six pounds weight of gold was taken last week from a paddock. Mr Roberts, the Champion Billiard Player, left town for Melbourne in the Albion yesterday. It is the intention to form a Fire Brigade at Port Chalmers. The names of a considerable number who are prepared to join have been obtained, and a meeting to further the object has been appointed to take place on Friday evening at Dodson’s Provincial Hotel. . . .
