PLUNKET SHIELD

A WIN FOR WELLINGTON OTAGO DISMISSED FOR 219 PARSLOE’S FINE AVERAGE By a margin of SO runs Wellington defeated Otago in the Plunket Shield cricket match which was concluded at Carisbrook yesterday. Otago, with five wickets down for 158, required another 142. runs for a win when play was resumed on a good wicket yesterday, and Cavanagh and Smith made a promising start. Parsloe, however, found that he could make the ball lift, and bumped them down on the wicket. Fortune turned against Otago when Cavanagh, at 63, and Dunning were caught off their hands from rising balls, and- with the exception of Smith, who scored 54, the remaining batsmen went quickly, the innings closing after less than an hour and a-half’s play for 219.

Parsloe took three wickets for 23 runs during yesterday’s play and for the innings-secured the excellent average of seven for 66.

Wilson and Parsloe opened the bowling when Cavanagh (52) and Smith (22) resumed Otago’s innings. The batsmen settled down quickly and scored at a steady rate, but Smith, at 28, gave a possible chance of dismissal. He glanced a leg ball from Parsloe and Blandford got a hand to the ball but could not hold it. It would, however, have been a brilliant catch if it had been taken. Cavanagh reached 60 by turning Wilson round to the fence, the ball going dangerously near Lamason., Then Parsloe sent down a''ball 'which rose sharply and shot off Cavanagh’e hand to O’Brien at third slip, and the catch was held. 1796—63.

Dunning, the newcomer, opened with four off Parsloe, but', when he tried to pull the same bowler round to leg, the hall rose sharply off his glove and shot high behind the wicket, Ashenden running across from first slip to take the catch. 185—7—4.

After Uttley had joined Smith, Griffiths relieved Wilson. Uttley was lucky when a ball rose off the edge of his bat and fell out of reach of the field. Then he pushed a ball from Parsloe into the hands of Lamason, who was fielding at silly mid-off.. 197 —B—B.8—8. * Mills, the incomer, brought 200 up in 195 minutes. Parsloe had bowled 10 overs for 23 runs and three wickets before he was relieved by Gallichan, 1 whose first ball- Smith, at 39, snicked past Parsloe at. first Slip, the ball going for four. It appeared to be a simple catch. In Gallichan’s nest over he survived an appeal for a catch behind the wickets.' The next success went to Griffiths, who' completely beat, Mills. 212—9—4. '

Dickinson lifted Griffiths for a single and then Smith got him away for a brace to reach 50 in 94 minutes. The next ball Smith snicked to the fence, but when he swung into another ball from Ell, near the leg boundary, accepted a catch, and the innings closed. 219—10 —54.
