MATCH AGAINST TRANSVAAL VISITORS IN STRONG POSITION JOHANNESBURG, January 25. (Received Jan. 26, at 9 p.m.) The Australian cricketers commenced a match against Transvaal. The home team won the toss and batted. Rowan and Coen, displaying aggressiveness, put on 44 in the first half hour. Mitchell also forsook his customary caution, scoring brightly. Features of the innings were the success of O’Reilly’s leg trap, which claimed five victims, and the fine keeping of Barnett, who did not concede a single bye. After losing Brown and Richardson the Australians completely mastered the Transvaal bowling, boundaries coming more frequently than singles. Fingleton and Darling added 100 in 62 minutes and continued to punch the tired bowling until stumps were drawn. Following are the scores:— TRANSVAAL. First Innings.
