BRITISH BY-ELECTION

ROSS AND CROMARTY THE CONSERVATIVE CANDIDATE (British Official Wireless) RUGBY, January 13. The Ross and Cromarty Liberal Association rejected the offer of Mr Randolph Churchill, who was adopted on Saturday as a candidate in the forthcoming byelection by the local Conservative Association, to stand down if the former body would nominate a Liberal-National candidate in place of Mr Malcolm MacDonald. Mr MacDonald received a telegram from Mr Stanley Baldwin stating that he had the Prime Minister’s wholehearted support, and strongly urging Unionists, in the interests of the National Government, to support Mr MacDonald as they did Mr Macpherson. MR CHURCHILL HOWLED DOWN . LONDON, January 13. (Received Jan. 14, at 5.5 p.m.) The Ross and Cromarty Conservatives executive telegraphed to Mr Baldwin declaring that his support of Mr MacDonald was astonishing and regrettable, and challenged the whole democratic structure of the party. He added that he expected Mr Baldwin loyally to support the executive when it resisted headquarters pressure to accept a non-Con-servative. Pipers escorted Mr MacDonald to a meeting, where he was cordially received, his supporters including Mr W. S. Morrison, Financial Secretary to the Treasury, Sir William Martineau, exchairman of the Conservatives, and Captain Shaw Mackenzie. Another 7 committeeman resigned tonight. A crowd howled down Mr Randolph Churchill when he attacked Mr MacDonald from an hotel balcony.
