POPULARITY OF MOTORING

GROWTH IN NEW SOUTH WALES In the past 30 years New South Wales lias seen its total of registered motor cars grow from three to 500.000, according to Mr W. J. Bradley, K.C.. president of the Royal Automobile Club of Australia. who arrived in Auckland on a holiday visit by the Mariposa. Mr Bradley said that bis club, which was formed 30 years ago by Mr Harrie Skinner, who was well known in New Zealand as a member of J. C. Williamson companies, had done much to foster the popularity of motoring, and now, in conjunction with the National Road and Motorists’ Association, it ivas catering for the local and touring motorists in the same way as automobile associations of New Zealand. As a result of this growth of motor cars the traffic problems in the metropolitan area of Sydney had become very important in the view of the police, who still control traffic in the city. A large number of policemen were employed with traffic work. Recently they had undertaken a campaign for greater safety on the roads, and an active interest was being taken in it by the motorists’ clubs There was no speed limit legislation in New South Wales, but the ordinary police regulations making it an offence to drive in a manner dangerous to the public. That was a deterrent. A strict view was taken in the administration of the regulation, and the automobile clubs set their fhces sternly against reckless driving. Mr Bradley, who is a prominent barrister in Sydney, is the lecturer in industrial law at Sydney University. When the Readjustment Commission was sitting he represented the Public Service Association at the hearings.

While in New Zealand Mr Bradley will visit Wellington, where he will confer with the Prime Minister, Mr M. J. Savage, concerning questions of industrial law, and he has also to deliver several communications on behalf of the New South Wales Government. Mr Bradley pointed out that New Zealand had in the past led the way in industrial legislation, and a, good deal of New South Wales industrial law had been copied from the Dominion.
