SWEPT OUT TO SEA
MEN ON UPTURNED CANOE BROUGHT BACK BY TIDE , (Per United Press Association) PALMERSTON N., January 13. Swept out to sea from the mouth of the Manawatu River at Foxton yesterday afternoon, when their canoe capsized, three young men had a remarkable escape from drowning when the set of the tide brought them ashore again after they had been clinging to the craft for three hours ami a-half. They were A. Follctt, aged 28, of Feilding, E. Hughes, aged 22, and P. Hughes, his brother, aged 20, of Palmerston North, The waves frequently swept over the men, ami sharks were seen in the immediate vicinity. They were nbt strong swimmers. Their outrigger canoe was upset at 2 p.m. near the mouth of tho river, and when righted was practically submerged. They climbed on to tho outrigger supports, but gave up hope. An aeroplane which passed overhead evidently noted their plight. Gradually, however, the current brought the craft back two miles down the beach at 5.30 p.m. By that time the men were absolutely exhausted.
