PORT CHALMERS NEWS
OBITUARY MRS M. J. DA COSTA. The death occurred at her residence, Scotia place, on Saturday of Mrs M. J. Da Costa. She was an active member of the Port Chalmers Methodist Memorial Church, and during the war period assisted in the work carried out by the Port Chalmers Ladies’ Patriotic Committee. RAILWAY FARES The general manager of railways (Mr G. H. Mackley) has advised the Mayor of Port Chalmers (Mr T. Scollay) that the mattter of granting some reduction in the existing railway rates between Dunedin and Port Chalmers had been carefully considered. The financial returns, stated the manager, did not justify the department in granting the measure of relief recently asked for. In regard to concessions in railway suburban fares for young people _in employment, an analysis of the position showed that apprentice ticket-holders averaged eight miles of travelling,' while the cost to them per journey was only 1.98 d. At such a low return the rate was uuremunerative, and an extension of the concession could not be granted. TERRA NOVA SEA SCOUTS An enjoyable and profitable time was spent, by the Terra Nova Sea Scouts at their camp at the Spit from December 30 to January 7. The Otago Harbour Board gave permission for the Scouts to have the use of the barracks, which proved to be very comfortable and convenient. An attractive programme claimed the attention of the boys. During the mornings and afternoons the troop wont for hikes across country, played cricket, or practised first-aid to the injured, and signalling (Morse and semaphore). With the co-operation of the men of the Taiaroa Head signal station the boys were able not only to send and receive messages, but received an impetus in their work. This was greatly appreciated. At 5 p.m. the flag was lowered, and dinner came at 5.30. In the evenings the boys had good times with impromptu concerts, mock courts, and mock parliaments.
In the absence of the scoutmaster, Mr H. Culbert. Pastor J. Sands was in charge, while Bosun C. Buchanan and Bosun’s Mate J. Fraser were responsible for the cooking. The campers are extremely grateful for the assistance given by Captain and Mrs F. Mackenzie in securing camp gear and helping in so many ways to make the camp a success.
