NOTES FROM WELLINGTON

(Special to Daily Times) WELLINGTON, December 10. The Trentham Stakes, which the stewards of the Wellington Racing Club decided should be placed on the programme for the third day of the summer meeting next month, will be run over a mile and a-quarter and carry a stake of £4OO. The weights will be colts and geldings 8.10 and fillies 8.7. With the three-year-old supremacy still undecided and likely to be uncertain even after the Auckland meeting where Kinnoull is not engaged in the Great Northern Derby, the Trentham semi-classic will attract widespread interest. After Werohia had been beaten at Feilding, Mr F. Ormond had practically decided to let him drop out of the Auckland Cup and race him at Manawatu, but his solid form at Woodville showed him up! in a different light and all going well he will be sent up to Ellerslie to fulfil engagements. The fact that he has not been rehandicapped will be an added in-' ducement to make the trip. Woodville form in the past has often provided a good line for and those who saw Werohia score in his two races last week will not be surprised should he make a very bold showing on Boxing Day. By Greayspear from Huiareu, the latter a half-sister to Toxeuma, he has breeding credientials* in his favour, and provided a capable light-weight can be secured to ride him near the minium on which he has been handicapped, Werohia looks as good a prospect as anything from down this way.,

F. Davis will be taking a team of six to the Auckland summer meetings, comprising Senior, Karl, Kotu, Plato, Haul Monde and Bieritage. Luke Wilson will take Wagner and Corroboree* J. Olsen Spy and Hest; A". E. Neale Diatomous; J. H. Jefferd Kind Heart, and W. M'Kinnon Werohia. There was some doubt about whether Werohia had been entered for anything but the Cup, but a perusal of the list shows that he is also in the other main handicaps at the meeting. W. Rayner will be going up with Mr Currie's team, for which G. Hum-phries-will again be the horseman. 'R. Reed was to have ridden Jonathan in the Cup, but the withdrawal of the Thespian horse leaves him without a mount. Reed will be on Corroboree. It was also hoped to secure him for Wagner in the Foal Stakes, but he was previously engaged for King Heart.

The feature of the Woodville meeting was the good form of the three-year-olds Entail, Heritage, Shu, and Corrbboree, all being responsible for solid performances. The latter pair raced only in hack company, and therefore scarcely measured up to the showings of Heritage and Entail, but they were excellent efforts all the same. The presence of this quartet albne without other leading three-year-olds is srJing to invest the Auckland racing with exceptional interest. The win of the two-year-old colt Wagner at Woodville was no more than expected after his form at Feilding, and ir. winning as he did against moderate company after getting out so well from the barrier he could not be labelled a& anything .exceptional, but it was good fill, the same. It was obvious that he had benefited greatly from his initial race at Feilding, and further improvement should see him r'uunhig well in his engagements at Auckland. Malar, who ran second to Wagner at Woodville. is a two-year-old with appar ently good prospects for the future. He was having his first race, and was slow to get going in the race, but once lie settled down to the business he came home with a great effort. He has only trot to improve as usual with a bit of racing to win good races. Mala is a particularly well-giown and powerful-looking colt by Lackham from Lueretia. He was bred by Mr C. T. Keeble, and is raced by his trainer, H. E. Russell. Lueretia is by Lucullus from the Benzonian mare Signal March, and Mala is closely related to Sporting Chance and Brown Betty. The win of Diatomous at Woodville was a good one for a horse under 9.6. and having his first race for several months: but it could not be termed a really high-class effort. He was all out at the finish to stall off False Scent, and the form of the latter would not entice much support in first-grade company. Still, Diatomou« is a brilliant horse sure to improve and appreciate his drop in weicht in the Railway Handicap, in which he has 8.6.
