SOUTH OTAGO HOSPITALS

MEETING OF BOARD The monthly meeting of the South Otago Hospital Board was held yesterday at Balclutha. The chairman (Mr H. A. Brough) presided, and there were also present Messrs King. Fenton, Harris, Christie, Rennie, Russell. Sutherland, and M'Gregor. ART UNION DONATION. ■ Messrs Hammond and M'Arthur, Ltd., Wellington, forwarded a cheque for £G, representing portion of the profits of Nos. 43 and 44 art unions, to be used for the relief of distress at Owaka. —Received. NATIONAL HEALTH SERVICE. It was decided to draw the attention of the new Government to the necessity of introducing a health insurance scheme as soon as possible.—lt was pointed out by members that such a scheme had been advocated by the board for many years. MEDICAL SUPERINTENDENT'S REPORT. The medical superintendent (Dr D. G. Radcliffe) submitted the following report for November on the hospitals under the board's jurisdiction, the figures for the corresponding month last year being shown in parentheses:— Balclutha Hospital.—Admissions, 52 (61); discharges, 62 (52); remaining, 32 (41); X-ray examinations, 25 (38); massage treatments, 70 (55). Milton Hospital.—Admissions, 10 (14).; discharges, 8 (10); remaining, 6 (8). Owaka Hospital.—Admissions, 13 (16); discharges, 14 (22); remaining, 5 (6). Kaitangata Hospital.—Admissions, 1 (8); discharges, 2 (4); remaining, nil (s)*; out-patients, 9 (4). The report was adopted. FINANCE. The treasurer reported that tlia receipts for the past year had amounted to £1152 2s 6d and the expenditure to £1196 lis 2d. The debtor balance at date was £4339 lis 6d, a reduction of approximately £IOO since November 30. The report was adopted. SEASON'S GREETINGS. The chairman extended to the board members and the members of the staff the season's greetings. He also thanked the members of the board for their co-opera-tion during his period as chairman. Mr Fenton and Mr Renton reciprocated the chairman's good wishes.
