ST. CLAIR IMPROVEMENT ASSOCIATION

ANNUAL MEETING The annual meeting of the St. Clair Improvement Association was held last evening in the surf bathing pavilion, the president (Mr R. C. Love) occupying the chair. There was a good attendance of members. The committee’s annual report stated that after a lapse of five years, the previous carnival having been held, in 1930, it was decided, in view of the fact that conditions were gradually improving, to revive the annual carnival so that the public support could be gauged. The committee was again pleased to assist in the matter of beach patrol, which had become an essential service during the school holidays. A donation to cover four weeks’ engagement of the patrol was made to the Surf Association, and the City Council arranged for it to be carried on for a further four weeks. Although the committee took the credit for inaugurating this service to the children and public generally, it was still felt that the nature of the service was such that should be guaranteed and provided by the City Council. The Ocean Beach Domain Board was successful in its efforts to have the new Esplanade completed as far as the steps before Christmas of last year, and this was an appreciated improvement. The construction of the balance of the extension was progressing favourably, and this, together with the walling of the bank, would effect a permanent improvement to the waterfront. The adoption of the report was moved by the chairman, who outlined the work which had been done during the year. Mr J. R. Callander seconded the motion, which was carried. The election of officers resulted as follows-President, Mr R. C. Love; vicepresidents, Messrs J. R. Callander and E. C. Armitage; committee —Messrs D. Buchanan, E. N. Falck, M. A. Robson, W. J. Brinsley, M. Rogerson, H. D. Gillies and VV. J. Davidson; treasurer, Mr H. H. Henderson; auditor, Mr P. J• Priest; honorary solicitor, Mr J. W. Thomson; secretary, Mr H. E. Lyons. It was announced that the surf bathing pavilion would be open continuously this season for the use of the public. In order to ensure having the beach patrol in operation throughout the school holidays, it was decided to make the customary donation.
