AT HOME AND ALOFT
Statistics of fatal accidents recentlycompiled in the United Stales prove that you face 266 times the danger of injury while reading a book at home walking down the cellar stairs than your neighbour does when he embarks on the evening aeroplane for' a distant city. This year, if past experience is repeated, fully 5,184,500 of the United States'® 125,000,000 men, women and children will suffer accidents in their homes. Of the 661,370 or more passengers riding in transport aeroplanes for a total distance of 49,000,000 miles, not more than 357 will he' involved in 73 accidents, and only 88 will receive as much as a scratch. One in 24 will be hurt at home, whereas only one in 6378 will meet an accident on an air liner! The surprising number of 1,397,288 passengers flew 75,602,152 miles in private aeroplanes last year, and only 2711 were involved in 1549 accidents. Of these, 786 were hurt.
