GUILTY OF MANSLAUGHTER THREE YOUTHS SENTENCED SYDNEY, November 29. Three. youths—Hollebone, Charters, and Smith—were sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment for the manslaughter of Hobson. William Hollebone, James Charters, and Edward Smith were charged with having murdered Leslie Hobson, aged 39, at Newtown, a suburb, on October 7. They were found guilty of manslaughter and remanded until Friday for sentence. The evidence disclosed that Hobson, while assisting another man who was outnumbered in a street brawl, was knocked down and kicked to death. The affair was witnessed by several shopkeepers, who were afraid to intervene. ADMISSION OF AIRCRAFT SYDNEY, December 1. (Received Dec. 1, at 10 p.m.) Mr E. A. Parkhill announced that the Commonwealth Government had decided to lift the ban and allow American and foreign aircraft to be directly imported into Australia. The Minister explained that aircraft not accompanied by a certificate of airworthiness were formerly not admitted. As America, Germany and some other foreign countries were not members of the International Convention for Air Navigation this virtually excluded importations from them owing to difficulties involved in providing certificates of airworthiness. Other parts of the Empire had already agreed to recognise the airworthiness of American aircraft, subject to certain technical requirements. The Government wag satisfied that the decision will assist the development of aviation in Australia. Its decision was influenced by the difficulty of obtaining British planes suitable to all Australian conditions, and the difficulty of obtaining deliveries of British aircraft, due to the preoccupation of British manufacturers with military orders for expansion of the Royal Air Force. The matter will be reviewed when it becomes possible to secure reasonably prompt deliveries of British aircraft equally suitable to Australian requirements.
