MODEL YACHTING
The official opening of model yacht season was held at Macandrew Bay on Saturday in perfect weather conditions, a light breeze blowing from the north-east. Mr G. F. Bewley (president of the Otago Model Yacht Association) welcomed all present, and outlined the activities of the new association, stating that -this was the first occasion of a combined opening. The large attendance present, he said, revealed the fact that model yachting was becoming an aquatic sport to be considered.
Mr C. M. Hewitt (Tomahawk Boating Club), Mr W. G. lies (Vauxhall Model Yacht Club) and Mr J. Rutherford (Port Chalmers Yacht Club) also spoke on behalf of their clubs, after which Mr Bewley declared the season open. A series of four races was then held, the classes being according to the standard stipulated by the association. The results ivere as follows:
Super Class. —J. Miller’s Marguerite 1, R, Nilsen’s Pearl 2.
First Class. —W. G. Ilea’s Oneway 1, Charlie Dickinson’s Pixie 2. Second Class. —K. Mitchell’s Reverie 1, Tom Weir’s Wee Tom 2. Third Class. —Frank Nelson’s Alvena 1, Lex Landreth’s Te Tiki 2. The facilities for handling the models were excellent. The launch Te Tiki was placed at the disposal of the association by the Macandrew. Bay Model i’acht Club and also a whaleboat belonging to Mr W. G. Rowlands. At the completion of the races afternoon tea was served in the Boating Club’s shed by the Ladies’ Committee of the Macandrew Bay Club. Visitbrs and children were then taken for a short trip on the harbour in the launch Te Tiki. At the conclusion, Mr J. Miller (Vauxhall) thanked the committee of the Macandrew Bay Club for the manner in which they had been entertained.
