In making further reference to the danger of canoes in the sea the president (Mr A, I. Cottrell), at the annual meeting of the Canterbury Surf Life-Saving Association (reports the Star-Sun), said he did not think it was right that any person in a canoe should co more than 300 yards from the shore. To go out further was purely foolbardly and stupid, and placed not only the occupant of the canoe but those on shore in danger. Apparently surf club members could not be given jurisdiction in the water, but he felt that members would have to take the law into their own hands and. if people persisted in going far out, they would have to obtain the right to veto canoes or. if such people would not come in. they would have to bring them in. The problem was one that would have to be dealt with during the season.
