NORTH END CLUB RACES Favoured with ideal rowing conditions, the North End Rowing Club held its Committee Fours on Saturday from the Ravensbourne end of the fertiliser wharf to opposite the boatshed, a distance of three-quarters of a mile. Following are the results: — First Heat'.—F. Eggers (str.), D. M'Callum, Mathewson, Thomson, 1; J. Hurrell (stf.), S. Brown, Chisholm, M’Kensey, 2; F. Hogg (str.), H. Stevens, C. Graham, W. Pay, 3. From the start Eggers gained about a length’s lead from Hogg and Hurrell. About 100 yards from the start No. 2 in Hogg’s crew “ caught a crab.” This mishap lost Hogg about two lengths, but tho crew increased the speed of its stroke and gradually Overhauled Hurrell. After half the distance had been covered Eggers’s crew, rowing a good, slow stroke, hftd taken command of the race, and it was left to the other two to fight out second place. Nearly 200 yards from the finish Hogg caught Hurrell, but in a close finish Hurrell took second place by half a canvas. Eggers won by two lengths. Second Heat.—M. Butterfield (str.), Verngreeu, E. Butterfield, Meano, 1; L. Smith (str.), Robertson, Poynter, Reene, 2; A. Brown (str.), C. Butterfield, F. Chisholm, Cox, 3. The three crews got aw r ay to an even start, but after a quarter of the distance had been covered Butterfield’s crew had a lead of a length and a-half over L. Smith’s boat, which was slightly ahead of Brown. At the halfway mark Smith was gaining slightly on the leader, with Brown half a length away, this order remaining at the finish. final. Eggers defeated Butterfield. From the start .the two crews rowed stroke for stroke until a quarter of the distance had been covered, when Butterfield increased his stroke. This did not have any effect on Eggers, who gradually gained a lead of three-quarters of a length. Both crews were rowing with every ounce at the finish. Nearing the finishing line Butterfield gained slightly, but in the final sprint Eggers drew away to win by a length. PORT CHALMERS CLUB No. club races were held by the Port Chalmers Rowing Club of Saturday. At a special meeting of the Selection Committee, the following crews were chosen to represent the club at Macandrew’s Bay:—Senior Four: J. Mitchell (str.), J. Solomon (3), C. Neilson (2), J. Thorn (bow). Senior Sculls No. I: J. Solomon (str.), C, Neilson (bow). Senior Sculls No. 2: 6. Mitchell (str,), G. Thorn (bow).
