LABOUR VOTE

A CONSISTENT SWING An indication of the consistency of the swing towards Labour is provided by a comparison of the votes polled tor the Labour candidates in the 25 largest pro-Labour electorates. Except in one or- two instances the increase in Labour’s favour varies from over a thousand votes to nearly three thousand, and in . practically every case it has occurred in a commercial and industrial constituency. Labour lost ground in Wellington North, where the vote dropped from 4531 in 1931 to 4468 this year; in Palmerston North, where it dropped from 5220 to 4400; and in Wanganui, where it dropped from 4506 to 4433. In Wellington Suburbs Labour polled 6638, which was a larger total than that on which the majority of Labour candidates were elected. At the previous election the Labour vote was 5112. The following table compares the Labour voting in a number of electorates at the last two elections:—

The biggest Nationalist vote was polled by Mr W. A. Bodkin (Central Otago), who topped the list with 5740. His previous total was 5156, Mr S. G. Holland (Christchurch North) polled 5652, as compared with a Nationalist vote of 5527 in 1931.
