A GIANT CLOCK
A giant clock with hands massive enough to serve as perches for workmen is being installed for the new Rand airport in South Africa. It will enable airmen flying as high as 3000 feet overhead to read the time. The face, 30 feet in diameter, will be level with the surface of the earth, and the mechanism that runs the hands will be operated by electricity and be housed underground. The minute hand is 17 feet long and the hour hand 144 feet. The huge clock is pattened after a similar giant timepiece that has proved a practical innovation since it was installed recently at an airport near London.
