Mining Hand Book The principal section of the “Mining Hand Book of Australia, 1936,” is devoted to a summary of the essential information relating to more than 800 gold and base metal mining companies operating in Australia, New Guinea, Papua, Fiji, Malaya, and New Zealand. This information, which is based principally upon reports and articles published recently in “ Chemical Engineering and Mining Review,” is unusually complete, and includes capital, directors, secretary, solicitors, bankers, etc., as well as brief details of the mine, ore reserves, and treatment plant. The information given is up to November 1, 1935. Complete statistics of metal production in all States of the Commonwealth for the past 25 years and the detailed metal and mineral production in each State for 1933 and 1934 comprise an important feature. A summary of the mining laws of the Commonwealth and of Fiji and New Guinea is published for the first time. Other features include London metal prices for the past 25 years, wages awards, glossary of technical terms, a discussion on the valuation of gold mining shares, and cost data for the mining industry. (Tait Publishing Company, f 1.)

Christian Messages The annual report of_ the British and Foreign Bible Society is entitled “Tim Common Bond,” and, as in previous years is considerably more than a formal record of work done, the articles, illustrations, and production generally being of an admirable nature. It is mentioned that in the past year 14 now languages have been added to the society’s list, a figure which has never been surpassed. Large gifts to funds from the dominions are the subject of comment, including over £SOOO from Now Zealand.

Mr Trevor G. Rain (“ Friendly Fellow,” of Station IZB Auckland) has published a second booklet of an inspirational nature, in which he deals with the problems and perplexities of the family to-

day, and indicates the ways in which Christianity may prove of practical assistance in answering them. The title of the publication is “The Human Touch” (Scott and Scott, Is). Italy’s Case From Rome conics a pamphlet “The Grounds for the Serious Charges Brought by Italy Against Abyssinia,” in which are itemised alleged Abyssianian hostile acts extending over many years. Abyssinia, it is stated, has not justified the confidence shown by the League of Nations and “ the country must be transformed and reformed by foreign intervention and control.” Literary The revelations of considered literary talent in the Dominion which are made* in the New Zealand Mercury are one oi the cheering features upon the cultural landscape. The November issue introduces several new writers, all of whom can lay some claim to articulate and intelligent literary appreciation, and the prize-winning contributions are all pleasing. Phyllis I. Young’s “ Sing, Lover, Sing,” is a charming lyric, and Eve Langley’s “ Sappho Insensate " has a characteristic resonance. (35 Nairn street, Wellington, Is.). Miscellaneous In a well-documented booklet, “Japan and the Defence of Australia,” a writer under the pseudonym “Albatross,” urges that the Commonwealth would have to look to itself for protection in the event of the Japanese fighting services turning thitherwards as a territory for expansion. Japan, he declares, could seize an opportunity when the British fleet is occupied in European waters, and the Australian Navy could not provide adequate defence. He advocates that the strengthening of Australia’s land and air defences offers the best form of security against Japanese aggression. (Robertson and Mullens, 2s 6d.) The, December issue of the Dunedin Technical High' School Magazine is eloquent of the many-sided interests, practical and cultural, which are fostered at this institution. A full account of the school year is supplemented by original verse and prose contributions and reproductions of art pupils’ work, that are distinctly a credit to students and teachers alike.
