TRADE IN INVERCARGILL

STEADY INCREASE IN BUSINESS RETAILERS SATISFIED (Special to Daily Times) INVERCARGILL, November 29. Throughout Invercargill at the present time a healthy tone is in evidence in trade, a steady increase in the volume of business handled is reported by retailers, and the approach of Christmas has caused anticipations to be made of a further quickening. Several business men when approached by a reporter expressed themselves as satisfied with the demand for their goods. The manager of a large drapery establishment said he could describe the business handled by his firm as “ all right.” It was much the same as at the approach of Christmas in past years, and there were definite indications that from now on to Christmas there would be a further increase. A cheering message was conveyed by the manager of a firm of electrical merchants, which also stocks builders’ requirements. “We are very busy,’"he said, “ in fact the busiest we have been for. years.” This satisfactory state of affairs was largely caused by the building boom and the actions of large manufacturers in installing new plants. A footwear merchant remarked that business was good and there had been a steady increase throughout the year. All that was wanted now was good weather to stimulate the demand for summer goods. The fact that a distinct falling off in trade had been felt immediately prior to the election was stressed by the proprietor of a sports depot, but that, he said, was now over. Thursday had been a busy day with a free flow of money noticeable. There was also heavy booking for trips to tourist resorts. The approach of the election had had an unsettling effect, but that was over and done with, and a good Christmas trade was anticipated. “ Generally speaking we have been busy,” stated a hardware merchant. “ For the last 12 months we have had no complaint, the farmers’ demands keeping us very busy.”
