THE OFFICIAL COUNTS The official counts of all votes recorded in the five Dunedin district electorates will probably be commenced next week. None of the seats is in doubt, however, and the absentee, postal, and seamen’s votes cannot affect the results announced on Wednesday night. The returning officers are now carrying out a scrutiny of the rolls used in every booth. TASMANIAN PREMIER’S VIEWS (United Press Association) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) HOBART, November 29. The magnificent swing to Labour in the New Zealand elections is the result of the inclusion in the platform of that party of the plank of ‘ community control of credit,’ and there is no question that there is going to be some mighty and far-reaching changes in the monetary system of that Dominion,” said the Premier (Mr Ogilvie). BRITISH PRESS COMMENT (United Press Association) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) LONDON, November 28. The Daily Mail, in a leader on the New Zealand flections, says: “ The result will undoubtedly, encourage the extreme Labour Party in Australia, and may induce them to adopt the same programme of lavish promises. In the background is the peril of inflation.” The Scotsman says: “The New Zealand Government’s record was good;_better, for instance, than Mr Bennett’s in Canada. The fate of the Democrat Party, like the Reeonstructionists in Canada, or even the Liberals in Britain, seems to demonstrate a general impatience with middle parties which are known to be too weak to obtain office independently. The Labour programme abounds in obscurities, and will probably lead to inflation. New Zealand is on the brink of a hazardous experiment. The Government programme gave the hope of a steady, if not spectacular. improvement. The country, however. elected to follow a spectacular, and possibly disastrous, course, undeterred by the history of Socialist finance in Australia.” A SIGNIFICANT STATEMENT —_ (United Press Association) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) SYDNEY, November 28. The Telegraph, which publishes at length a radiophone interview with Mr Savage, comments: The new Prime Minister made a significant statement which is more than a platitude in the circumstances. He says he hopes to have the co-operation of the community in his legislation. It is safe to assume that lie means that a Government whose declared policy is to ‘ begin where Air Secldon left off ’ will not dismay New Zealand.”

APPREHENSION IN LONDON

(United Press Association) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) LONDON, November 29. (Received Nov. 29, at 5.5 p.m.) While the City awaits clarification of the situation, apprehension exists regarding the possibility of an increase in the New Zealand exchange rate, with an unfavourable reaction in Australia and the possible embarrassing of Mr Lyons and the prejudicing of Dominion conversions. The Daily Mail refers to the possibility of the New South Wales conversion being affected, and says that the election was a severe blow to the London Stock Exchange, The result was received in the Citv with considerable apprehension.

A REASSURING STATEMENT

(United Press Association) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) LONDON, November 2D. . (Received November 29. at 9 p.m.) The Times City editor, commenting on the weakness of New Zealand Government and municipal securities, ranging from 1J to 4J points, says: “New Zealand. even in the most difficult moments, enjoved a high reputation; hence the Labour victory was a shock to investors, causing a fair amount of selling, chiefly in small amounts. Holders of New Zealand securities, however, will be reassured by Mr Savage’s statement. At present it is impossible, owing to the vagueness of the Labour proposals, to say whether they are dangerous, but they annear to involve inflation of currency. Nevertheless the shipping industry should welcome the_ return of Labour owing to the promise _to act against foreign .subsidis'd ‘•binning.”
