EASTERN SOUTHLAND Cricket The following is the Eastern Southland representative cricket team to play Town at Invercargill to-day;—Lynch. Holden, O’Shea (Lumsden), Southern, Agnew, King, Brown (Celtic), Macara (Gore), Crawford, M'Kenzie (Waikoikoi), L. G. Townsend (Mataura). The team includes five former Southland representative players. Music Examinations ■■ The practical examinations of the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (London) were conducted at Gore on Wednesday by Mr Lloyd Powell. The following candidates were successful:— Grade 1 (primary): Mary Allander Hamilton (pianoforte, Mr C. Hillsden Hutton), Honor Smith (pianoforte. Miss Mary Johnston). Grade 2 (elementary): Joyce Cooper, Horace Dillon and Margaret Johnston (pianoforte. Miss M. Johnston), June Cook (singing, Mr C. H. Hutton), Margaret Elizabeth Wright (pianoforte, Mrs M. Reid). _ Grade 3 (transitional): Helen Marion Black (pianoforte, Mr C. H. Hutton), Betty Douglas (pianoforte. Miss E. Cleland). Grade 4 (lower): Joyce Gardiner and Neilina Richmond (pianoforte, Miss M. Johnston). Chamber of Commerce The guest of honour at the quarterly meeting of the Gore Chamber of Commerce on Thui’eday was Mr J. H. Reed, of the Invercargill Chamber, who gave an interesting address on commercial matters. The president (Mr H, H.' Doughty) presided, and extended a welcome to Mr Reed, who was accompanied bv Mr H. F. Drewe, business agent of the Bluff Harbour Board. In aknowledging the welcome, Mr Reed said that inviting him to address the chamber with a view to popularising the quarterly luncheons the chamber had paid him a high compliment. Mr Reed traversed the origin of the chambers of commerce in France early in the nineteenth century, followed by a similar development in Scotland and England. At the conclusion of his address Mr E. C. Smith moved a hearty vote of thanks to the speaker, which was carried by acclamation. , Pioneer Athletic Club A successful evening sports meeting was conducted by the Gore Pioneer Athletic Club on Hockey Park, Gore, on Wednesday evening. The entries were good in all events, and the many close finishes reflected credit upon the handicapping of Mr A. H. Davidson. The results are as follows:—7s Yards—First heat: T. ALEXANDRA Charge for Fruit Cases Fruitgrowers in this district are standing firm in their effort for the maintenance of the charge for fruit cases. A petition is at present being circulated in the district and is receiving strong support. Roaring Meg Power Scheme Work on the new power scheme for Central Otago from the Roaring Meg is now well under way, and present indications point to it being completed early in February. The erection of the power house and installation of the machinery is reaching the final stages. Work on the pipe line from the intake is being proceeded with and approximately two chains have now been welded. The work is proceeding well up to schedule, but tho fact that the dredges are unable to bo launched on account of the low level of the river, does not make it necessary for the work to be pushed on with undue haste. Health Stamp Campaign The Alexandra Committee held a successful street collection in aid of the Health Stamp Fund on election day. Members of the Alexandra branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union did excellent work as collectors, with the result that the fund was augmented to the extent of £lO 17s sd. A dance was held in the evening, when a further £8 9s was taken in aid of the fund. The Rev. Father L. Quinn, S.M., is at present conducting a mission at St. John’s Catholic Church. KUROW NOTES Dental Clinic Association The Director of Dental Hygiene (Mr J. L. Saunders) visited the Kurow clinic on Thursday. He was accompanied by Mr J. S. Nicolson, the district dental superintendent. The visitors were received by Mr L. Paveletich, president of the clinic, and the secretary. Mr Saunders was much impressed by the appearance and appointments of the clinic building. Various aspects of the work of the clinics was discussed, and Mr Saunders said that the benefits of clinic treatment were already apparent. Reference was made to the splendid work of Mr A. M. Davidson, late rector of Kurow High School, whose efforts had been instrumental in securing the foundation of the clinic in Kurow. Musical Treat Kurow was entertained on Tuesday evening by members pf the Haeremai Club of Oamaru, who staged an admirable performance of the light opera “ Tom Jones,” by Edward German. There was a good attendance, and the proceeds went to the Kiuow Presbyterian Chitrch funds. Solos, duets and quartets were sung by Mesdames Glass. Adair, Kinder and Misses

Bradstock, Ironside, Spedon, Samson and King, Messrs M‘Leod, Lane, M'Latchie, Lavender, Ferris and Biackgrove. Miss E. Weir gave a recitation and Mr R. J. Meldrum a violin solo. The conductor was Mr R. J. Meldrum and the pianist Miss A. Blair. At the close of the performance Mr J. L. MThail, convener of the Church Committee, thanked the artists for their fine performance, and Mr Meldrum suitably replied. Debating Club The executive of the Debating Club met on Thursday evening under the chair-, manship of the president (Mr L. Paveletich), and disposed of the proceeds of the work of the season. The members present were Miss M. H, Henderson, Messrs A. Hayes (secretary), C. Harman, and E. v Middleton. After all expenses were paid, a balance of. £6 12s 4d remained, and it was decided to give £4 to the school library and the remainder to the Kurow and Hakataramea Public Library. It was decided to make an earlier start with the debates next year, as it had been possible to hold only six debates during the term recently completed. Waitahi Lawn Tennis Sub-association The following are the results of the Waitaki Lawn Tennis Sub-asseciation’s competition matches: — Haka Valley v. Hakataramea.—Playing on the Haka Valley courts, the home team defeated Hakataramea by 13 sets and 86 games to 3 sets and 48 games. Livingstone v. Kurow. —Playing on the Kurow courts, the home team defeated Livingstone by 10 sets and 93 games to 6 sets and 72 games. On account of the representative fixture with North Otago to-day, competition games have been put forward to December 7. Waitaki Sub-association v. North Otago.—The following team has been selected to represent the Waitaki Lawn Tennis Sub-association against North Otago at Kurow today:—L. MTCinnon, H. C. Walker, Maude, Cameron, Sumpter, and T. MTCinnon; emergency, L. Pavletich; Misses -Johnson, Lawlor, Bloomfield, Lawson, Burnett, and Mrs Wilson; emergency, Mrs Gribben.
