DUNEDIN GARDENING CLUB

At the fortnightly meeting of the Dunedin Gardening Club, Mr J. M. Smith, fields superintendent of the Government Agriculture Department, delivered an interesting and instructive address on “ Soil Fertility and Manures and Insect Pests,” dealing with the formation and fertility of the various different soils and the necessity of good drainage. He stressed the importance of the use of lime and the use of artificial manures. He dealt fully with the various garden pests, giving .their life history and the best known remedies for their detraction. He illustrated his remarks with lantern slides, which gave a clear idea of the various points. At the conclusion he was accorded a hearty vote of thanks on the motion of Colonel Barclay. The president (Mr J. Passmore) extended a hearty welcome to Mr and Mrs Blackburn on their return from their trip to the Homeland. There were exhibited by members some good examples of the seasonable flowers.
