THE CLUTHA SHOW

AN IMPROVED EXHIBITION CATTLE AND HORSE JUDGING SUCCESSFUL CONCLUDING DAY The summer show of the Clutha and Alatau Agricultural and Pastoral Society was concluded yesterday in ideal weather, and attracted one of the largest attendances for some years. Visitors were present from all parts of Gtago, and the catalogued • entries, included a considerable number of stock, both horses and cattle, from outside districts. Judging yesterday was confined to the cattle and horse sections, which were disposed of by early afternoon, when a successful parade of prize-winning stock was staged. Thu programme of competitions and ring events which brought the day’s programme to a close was full of interest, and proceedings were enlivened from time to time by a musical programme discoursed by the local Pipe Band and the Balclutha Boys’ Band. THE CATTLE Among the cattle rings there were a lot of very fine animals, showing both breed and milking qualities, but in some instances the BtoqK were not brought out in the beet of condition. „ „ ~ Only small showings of Shorthorns were paraded. Mr A. C. Begg had the only beef type forward, a good stamp .ot yearling bull, true to type. • , The Milking Shorthorns were described by the judge as being of fair quality. They were very few in number, the outstanding animal being Mr Alan Bells (Stirling) champion yearling neuer, which should in time develop in to a good show cow. Mr H. Holgate (Bamego) won a championship ribbon and a red ticket with a very useful type of aged bull. Some of the best cattle quality m the show was found in the Bed Poll section, which was filled with stock from Mr John Donaldeon’e (Stirling) well-known Glen Eden herd. Thia breeder has built up an outstanding stud, which ranks among the best in the Dominion, and he was represented yesterday by a typically high-grade team. Young stock no lesgf than the maturer animals showed a uniformity of type and character which suggests sound breeding practice. Mr Donaldson’s champion bull was a show-ring veteran, Wairoa Chanceget, a North Island-bred bull, who carries hia 13 years marvellously and presents all the best of Bed Poll characteristics. The champion female was a very attractive three-year-old heifer, Glen Eden Fairy Bose, by Otahuna Charlie. In the Friesian section there were entries from several very good South Otago herds, and honours werq. divided between Messrs James Marshall (Kaitangata)j John Robinson and Sons (Milton), and Walter Stiven and Son (Paretai). -the male and female championships were won bv Mr Marshall with very excellent types of the black and white breed, and the’ Milton herd also produced some notable Ayrshire* made a good display, outside competition being present in the form ot a .‘strong team from the Mosgiel • herd of Messrs A. M. and J. Taylor, who showed a selection of their prize-winning stock at last Saturday’s Taieri Show. The neat little Ayrshire has earned a wide vogue in South Otago, and an excellent type of the breed has been evolved there. Ales: rs Bisset Bros. (Wangaloa) won the female championship with a good class 6f aged cow, the reserve award going to Messr* A. M. and J. Taylor. _ The bull championship was won by Mr T. W. Brown (Eatanui), who showed a very fine two-year-old sire, got by the imported Southland sire Harnelbel Calamity Pride. The reserve ribbon was won by the Mosgiel breeders’ three-year-oId # entry. The Jersey section was a good one, but it might have been more, interesting had there been more competition. Messrs E. H. Smith (Bamego) and H. C. Anderson (Stirling) had thing* very much their own way in most of the classes. _ The Champion' cow, Mr Smith’s aged in-nulk entry, was a good-bodied animal, with nice udder development, and Mr Anderson’s reserve champion, an aged dry cow, was another splendid type of Jersey dam. The heifers, most of them Mr Smith s, were . good typey sorts, and there was some excellent quality-in the bull classes. The most outstanding animal in the section wm Mr Smith’s champion -bull, a eire of very pleasing type, with plenty of constitution and breed character. The reserve champion, . Mr Anderson’s first prize two-year-old, was another attractive type, if anything a trifle too heavy in the shoulders. Mr A. Caldwell (Stirling) won a red ticket in the yearling bull class with a very mice youngster, Aldersyde Finis, recently imported from the North Island. Another very good class was that for heifer calves, in which the quality was exceptional. The selection . of crotebred and dairy types was a good one, and competition was very keen between Aleasre D. B. Wishart (Balclutha), H. C. Anderson, Bisset Bros., James Marshall, John Eobinson and Sons, E. H. Smith, A. M. and J. Taylor, and James Porter. In the fat cattle pens there were some beautifully-conditioned, well-bred stock from the Taieri district, shown by Mr E. Shennan (Outram), and local graziers, notably Air A. C. Begg (Warepa), were represented by some equally good descriptions of stock.' FAT SHEEP AND LAMBS The fat sheep and fat lamb sections were also judged yesterday, and produced a lot of exceptionally well-conditioned stock. Lambs were very well forward, and the whole display reflected great credit on the district. There was excellent competition and a wide distribution of the prize money. Among the most successful exhibitors were Alessrs James Lory (Balclutha), E. H. Alarshall (Stirling), H. Holgate (Bamego), Simon Wright (Balclutha), Townley Bros. (Stirling), Peter Andrrson (Stirling), John Mercer (Waitepeka),' Alexander Allison (Puerua), J. S. Smith (North Balclutha), Gilbert Stewart (Warepa), and J. E. Twaddle (Benhar). The judge, remarking on this section, said it would be in the interests of exhibitors if separate classes were provided for strong and fine-woolled fat stock, as the longwool types, as a rule were at a serious disadvantage when shown in company with Downs and Down cross types. DRAUGHT HORSES Very fair entries were received in the heavy horse section, the stock paraded including a good proportion of useful breeding types and a good showing of active, well-bred farm horses. The competition could have been stronger in some of the classes, but on the. whole the section was a very creditable one. The most prominent exhibitor was Air R. G. Lockhart, of Clarksville, who had a big string of horses present, practically all of them of his own breeding. In addition to winning both the female championships, he easily annexed the special award for the exhibitor gaining the most points in the section. ■ The most outstanding entries m the breeding classes were the first and secondprize aged stallions, which won the championship and reserve championship respectively; The champion was Air R. Hamilton’s (Kelso) Eoseprint, an entire with an excellent showing record, who has added success to success, since he was imported from Scotland about two years ago. He was reserve champion at thia year’s Royal Show at Hastings, and numbers among his other championship awards pride of place at last year's stallion parade at Tahuna 1 ark. Air R. Lockie’s Scotland’s Superb, who was reserve champion, is a much older horse and is consequently better known in the show ring. He has won the championship at Balclutha previously and has secured similar awards at most ot the southern shows during the past few years. A yearling colt by Scotland s Superb won the red ticket in his class for Air K. G. Lockhart and another bv the champion won second place for the same exhibitor. There were one or two very fair three-vear-old and two-year-old entires, the prizewinners being Alessrs R- Carruthers (Stirling). Taylor Bros. (Owaka). IX Finch (Kaitangata) and R. Clark (Clarksville). , The champion female was a yeM mare bv Fyvie Baronet shown by Air Lockhart, whose brood mare by Medrox Print took the reserve championship as well. -Both

were very Rood types of the breed. Mr Lockhart and Messrs Allison Bros. (Clarksville) took the bulk of the prizemoney in the female classes, but Mr Robert Clark (Clarksville) was also in the picture, especially in the filly classes, in which he showed some very fine descriptions of young stock. He won the special award for local yearlings with a filly by Desire, and also the Clydesdale Horse Society’s medal for yearlings and two-year-olds. In the gelding classes Messrs Allison Bros, had very little opposition, and they had things very much their own way in the classes for working teams. The class of gelding shown was very good, the first prize aged gelding being a particularly good specimen. * LIGHT HORSES The light horse rings at the Clutha Show are always well filled and this year was no exception to the rule. A few thoroughbreds and hackneys combined with a fair showing of ponies and a very good display of hacks and hunters to make an interesting exhibition of light horseflesh. In the thoroughbred and hackney section the principal prizewinners were Messrs W Telford (Otanomomo). B. Throp (le Houka). J. W. Young (Stirling) and W. B. Duff (Balclutha). There were good entries in'most ot the pony classes, Mr A. R. Johnston (Waikaka). Mr W. Russell (Burnside) and Messrs Gordon and W. B. Dun (Balclutha I' being prominent among the prizewinners. ■ The championship ribbon in this class was won with a very stylish little animal shown by Mr W. Russell. Hacks and hunters from South Otago, Central Otago and the Dunedin district made up a very good display. Mr W. Telford was the principal prizewinner, his string of mounts giving an excellent account of themselves and winning for him the points trophy. He won the heavvweight hack class with Miss K Wood (Beaumont) second and Mr J. k’ Brown (Dunedin) third. In the 13stone hack class Mrs T. D. Dalziel (Dunedin) won the red ticket and also the hack championship with her well-known hunter Chrysler, Miss Wood again being second and Mr F. M‘Hattie Outram) third. Mr Telford won the 11-stone hack class with Mr J. J- Morris (Dunedini second. Competition was brisk in nearly every section, and the general standard of duality of the exhibits was very good. There were not many harness horses paraded but the entries included two or three genuinely outstanding types., The championship was won by Mr W. J. Roberts (Clinton). The best lady rider was Miss Riddell, with. Miss K. Wood second and Mrs W. H. Gorton (Dunedin) I, 1 The -rate takings for the show amounted to £l7O.
