OTAGO HOSPITAL BOARD

MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the Otago Hospital Board was held last night. There were present: Messrs J. W. Dove (chairman), A. Steel, H. S. Sheat, M. Silverstone, A. F. Quelch, D. M'Lennan, F. Jones, M.P., Dr W. Newlands, Mrs Ross, Miss Runciman and Miss Farquhar. MR SALTZMAN'S DONATION. A letter was received from Mr S. Saltzman offering to give the sum of £IOOO to equip an eye, ear, nose and throat theatre in the ..new administrative block of the Duuedin Hospital.—The sec--retary reported that lie had conveyed the thanks of the board to the donor for his " magnificent gift," and it was stated that the chairman had also acknowledged the gift.—lt was decided to record a minute expressing appreciation of Mr Saltzman's generosity. CORRESPONDENCE. Mr J. A. Jenkins wrote to the board concerning hospital co-operation in Otago and Southland.—The chairman said that Mr Jenkins would ask the Director-general of Health to call a conference at a later date to deal with the matter. The Lodge St. George (Lawrence) wrote enclosing a donation of £2 2s for the Christmas Cheer Fund. —Received with thanks. STAFF CHANGES. Dr M'Lachlan advised that he was resigning from the position of house surgeon and stated that lie was unable to accept the position of senior house surgeon. —Resignation accepted. The medical superintendent recommended that Dr A. C. Belfield should be appointed senior house surgeon.— Approved. MR JONES CONGRATULATED. Before the board went into committee the chairman said he would like to take the opportunity to congratulate Mr Jones on his re-election for Dunedin South. They trusted that the many years of usefulness which lay ahead of. Mr Jones would be well spent on behalf of the community. In the course of his reply, Mr Jones said that under the new Government the hospital boards of the Dominion would receive better treatment than in the past, because it was the intention of Labour to do all it could for the people who came under the Government's care. RICHMOND ESTATE GIFT. The Perpetual Trustees, Estate, and Agency Company of New Zealand, Ltd., advised that £SO would be available this yaar from the Richmond estate for distribution among patients in institutions controlled by the board. —Received. RESIDENT MEDICAL OFFICER. The Joint Relations Committee recommended that Dr Raymond Kirk, M. 8., Ch.B., M.R.C.P., should be appointed senior resident medical officer at the Dunedi Hospital.—Approved. REPORTS ADOPTED. The reports of the Benevolent, Sanatorium, and Hospital Committees were approved without discussion. The Finance Committee's report was adopted with the exception of a small sub-clause dealing with the issue of a uniform to a porter. MONTHLY STATISTICS. The following monthly statistics were submitted by the medical superintendent (Dr J. Thomson) :—Patients admitted during October totalled 437 in addition to 288 who remained on September SO. The total treated had been 725, 234 recovered or were discharged, and 38 died. A total of 305 remained on October 31. The number of opeiations performed was 183. The report was adopted.
