THE WOMEN'S INSTITUTE

Reports of meetings of branches are requested, but they should be furnished promptly, for the publication of reports that are not supplied within a week from the date of the meeting cannot be assured.

The Kakanui Women's Institute held a successful euchre party and dance in the school. The euchre prizes were won by Mr A. Sidon, with Mrs Mould runnerup. Mr Leo Dougherty carried out the duties of M.C.

The Puerua Women's Institute met on November 20, when Mrs Caldwell presided. The motto was, "Good when lost is valued most," and the roll call, "A Sewing Hint." The demonstration for the afternoon was, "Rucked Cushions," by Mrs G. Grant. The competition, "Date Scones," was won by Miss E. Scott, with Miss S. Mason second. The competition for the year was won by Miss A. Mercer, with Miss P. Grant second in the senior section, and Miss S. Mason first and Miss E. Scott second, junior section. The hostesses were Misses A. Mercer and C. Grant.

The Waitahuna Institute met on Friday. The roll call was, "Salad Dressings." Mrs Labes gave a report of the recent half-yearly federation meeting in Dunedm.. Waitahuna is one of the institutes in the new, Mid-Otago Federation. A demonstration on "The uses of the various spare parts of a sewing machine" was given by Mr Parker (Balclutha), who was accorded a vote of thanks. The competition was for a hand-worked handkerchief. The voting resulted: Senior-—Mrs Labes first, Mrs W. Brown second; junior—Miss M. Woodley first, Miss M. Smith second. A competition, "Kitchen Articles,' was won by Misses Vanstone and Walker (equal). Hostesses were Mrs and Miss Vanstone and Mrs D. Scott. ** . *

Popotunoa Institute met on Saturday, the president presiding. The hostesses arranged the programme. The roll call was " Emergency questions." The competition was the "Best arranged bowl and vase of flowers." The former was won by Mrs Sanders, with Mrs Cooksley second, and the latter by Mrs Chapman Cohen, with Mrs Cooksley second and Mrs Sanders third. Mrs Cooksley gave a demonstration on " First aid and bandaging." Mrs Watkins proposed a vote of thanks to the demonstrator.

The Kaitangata Institute met on Thursday, November 21, when Mrs Petrie presided. The motto was "He who would not when he might, shall not when he would." and the roll call "A beauty hint. Mrs Watson reported on the business of the half yearly council meeting held in Dunedin in October and on the School of Instruction held in Balclutha. During the social half hour conducted by Mrs M. Carson, members bit a pig out of a wine biscuit, Mrs Millar and Mrs M'Auley making the best pigs. Mrs

Hadler gave a 10-minute talk on "How to Rest Properly." The demonstration was " Silkart Painting," by Mrs Watson. In the competition for home-made toffee Mrs Hadler was first, Miss Gibson second and Mrs Gibson third. In the second competition Mrs M'Auley put 145 articles into a matchbox and Mrs Sutton 136. Hostesses were Mesdames Fulton, O'Fee, and Wylie, and Miss Carter.

The Heriot Institute met on Thursday evening, when Mrs Sinclair presided. The motto was "Everybody's house, large or small, is somebody's ship of adventure." The roll call was "An amusing story." Mrs King give an account of the Otago Federation's meeting held in Dunedin last month. The social part- of the evening was provided by Mesdames Arthur and M'Lay in the form of two competitions—namely, A: " Guessing names of residents" (won by Mrs Calverley). B: " Making paper hats out of newspaper and eight pins" (won by Mrs Sinclair). Mrs Silcox, of Clinton, acted as judge. A humorous recitation was given by Miss S. Black. Mrs Silcox,. Clinton, gave a demonstration on " Papier mache arid Barbola work." Miss Moncur proposed a vote of thanks to Mrs Silcox. In the competition, "Best Homemade Toy," Miss I. Patersdn was first, Mrs Sinclair second, and Mrs A. Paterson third. The hostesses were Mesdames Cook, M'Lay, and M'Kay, and Miss M. Walker. '

The president (Miss Ludemann) presided at the meeting of the Papakaio Institute. Mise Ludemann reported on the business transacted at "the half-yearly meeting of the federation. A demonstration on " Wreath* making" wae given, by Mrs J. Aitcheson. For the social halfhour the one-act play, "The Playgoers," was presented by Mrs T. Wilson and Misses B. Borrie, J. M'Vie, L. Simpson, M. Nimmo, D. Ludemann, M. Kendall, and D. Mayfield. The competition, " Christmas Gifts," was won by Mrs D. M. Borrie, with Miss M. Ludemann second, and Mrs J. Simpson and Miss D. Ludemann third (equal). The sale table was well supplied, and good business was done. The hostesses were Mesdames S. Whyte and L. Simpson.

The Kakanui Institute met in the Sunday School Hall, Mrs J. M. Smith presiding. The motto was " Cheery people help weary people in their woes." The roll ■ call was " Sing, say, or penny pay." Miss Pattle (North Otago organiser) gave a talk on institute affairs, and on Mrs W. G. Wilson's motion was accorded a vote of thanks. The competition, "Three plain scones," resulted in Mrs Jones being placed first, with Mrs T. Wilson second.

The first birthday of the MacraesMoonlight Women's Institute was celebrated last Friday evening, when a large crowd assembled. Visitors were present from Palmerston, Dunback, Sutton and Hyde branch of the W..D.F.U. During the evening presentations were made to Mrs Sutherland for gaining the most points in the year's competitions, and to Mrs Ockwell for having judged several of the competitions. Items given were a sword dance by Miss Timms. a recitation by Mrs F. Hay, ajid songs by Misses Phelan and Roy. Members of the Hyde W.D.F.U. entertdined the gathering with a play entitled "The Area Bell." The birthday cake was piped in by Piper Gordon, of Palmerston, after whom followed a procession of the secretary, sitting in a wheelbarrow with the cake on her knee, and being wheeled by Mr G. Sutherland, behind whom came the other members of the Institute. Some toasts were honoured. The candle on the cake was lit by Mrs Day, of Palmerston Institute, and blown out by Mrs Thomas, of Dunback Institute. Mrs Day then cut the cake. Dancing followed, during which time Mr Elsom acted as M.C. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss Howard and Mr D. Sutherland, and a lucky spot one step by Miss Pollard and Mr D. Innes.
