PORT CHALMERS NEWS

PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH A most enjoyable function was held this week in the Presbyterian Church Hall, when past and present members of the Girls' Auxiliary, with their mothers, met to celebrate the "coming-of-age" of the movement in New Zealand. Mrs R. Dodds (Dominion president of- the Girls' Auxiliary) was one of the guests of honour. The hall and tables were tastefully decorated. The following toast list was honoured: — "The King"; "The Presbyterian Church of New Zealand" (proposed by Miss Lang and responded to by Mrs Dunn) ; "The Girls' Auxiliary" (proposed by Mrs Cleghorn and responded.to by Miss Jones, Girls' Auxiliary president); "The Presbyterian Women's Missionary Union and Busy Bees " (proposed by Miss Gilmour and responded to by Mrs Dunn). Mrs Dodds also spoke a few words of encouragement. The " Birthday Cake Ceremony" was a happy event on the programme, the 21 candles being lit by representatives of the various groups present. The cake was the gift of one of the mothers. Various items were rendered by the following:—Miss M. Agnew (recitation), Miss I. Farquharson. (song), Misses L. O'Brien and D. Neill (wand drill), and the Misses Farquharson (duet); During the evening bouquets were presented to Mrs Dodds, Miss Jones (president of the Port Chalmers branch) and Mrs Dunn, who presided. Miss Osborne proposed a hearty vote of thanks to all those who had helped to make the function such a happy and memorable one.

SAWYERS' BAY PRESBYTERIANS

A congregational gathering was held in the Sawyers' Bay Presbyterian Church to bid farewell to Mr and Mrs H. 0. Bowman and family, and to welcome the new missionary student and his wife (Mr and Mrs Alan Robertson). The moderator (the Rev. J. G. Dunn) referred to the good work carried out by Mr Bowman, both in the pulpit and among the people, and congratulated him on the excellent results of his work in the University and Theological Hall. On behalf of the congregation and the Bible class members, Mr Dunn presented Mr Bowman with a gold-mounted fountain pen and Mrs Bowman with a travelling rug. Mr R. D. Poison also spoke in appreciation of the services of both Mr and Mrs Bowman, and wished them well in their future sphere. A cordial welcome was extended to Mr and Mrs Alan Robertson, who were introduced to the people by Mr Poison. Opportunity was taken during the evening to say farewell to Mr and Mrs M. Hutchinson, who had been associated with the church for many years, and had recently moved to Dunedin. In making a presentation, the moderator spoke in warm terms of their service to the church in Sawyers' Bay.
