ANNUAL RIFLE MATCH

HIGH SCHOOL OLD BOYS v. PRESENT BOYS The annual match between the Old Boys and the Present Boys of the Otago Boys' High School was fired at Pelichet Bay yesterday afternoon. Conditions were comparatively pleasant during the early stages of the match, but heavy showers, accompanied by a boisterous wind, came up, and the last detail to lire had difficulty in registering on targets which had become almost invisible. Seven shots, with two optional sightcrs, were fired at 200 and 500 yards, and, considering the weather conditions, the shooting was of a high standard. The members of the Old Boys' team, whose average age was 69 years 4 months, used aperture sights, and, according to custom, handicapped themselves on this account by firing 10 men against the School's 11. The Present Boys, who proved in no need of a handicap, established a fair lead at the shorter range, ancl, considerably increasing it at the longer range, defeated the Old Boys by a margin of 73 points. Possibles were scored at 200 yards by Captain A. J. S. Cowie, of the Old Boys' team, and by R.Q.M.S. J. A. Cowie and Cadet R. Leslie, of the School team, and at 500 yards by Captain Cowie and Sergeant G. E. Gibbs, of the School team. Captain Cowie led the individual scoring with a tine 70, and was followed closely by Sergeant G. Gibbs with 68. The following are the detailed scores: —■ OLD BOYS' TEAM.

At the conclusion of the match Colonel E. R. Smith congratulated the School team on its victory and made reference to three members of former Old Boys' teams, Messrs R. Wales, R. Greensiade, and W. Mills, who had passed away during the year. Appreciative reference was also jr.tde to the assistance afforded during the match by members of the Dunediu and Kiwi Rifle Clubs and by the range warden (Mr W. Donaldson).
