. Reports to .the fortnightly meeting of the Waimate Borough Council were received from the Works, Watef, and Reserves Committees and adopted. These stated that work in repairing footpaths and channelling in the borough had now been commenced. The possibility of laying down further tennis courts at Vic toria Park was being considered. As an experiment, part of the Municipal Baths had been painted and a great improvement was elfected. The Water Committee recommended the removal of the present dressing shed on the western side of the baths and the erection of a larger one It was proposed to put a shower ami convenience at the top end of the baths and to extend the seating 20 feet on both sides of the bath. The borough librarian reported that there were now 204 members of the library. During the month 2089 book? were issued and £4 14s Id received in subscriptions.

The Mayor (Mr G. Dash) mentioned that the South Canterbury Health Camp Committee had been unable to hold the camp in Waimate this year owing to the lack of a suitable building. He suggested that the possibility of building » suitable camp house should be considered —The matter was left in the hands of the General Committee. EASTERN SOUTHLAND Bowls The first match of the Eastern Southland Bowling Centre’s mid-week competi tion was played at Gore on Wednesday evening when the Gore B team defeated Gore A by a margin of five points, 80 points to 75 points. * Rifle Shooting The members of the Gore Defence Rifle Club completed the second stage for Mr Gunning!) am’s Christmas lamb on Wednesday afternoon, the ranges being 500 yards and COO yards. The weather was unpleas antj and made the shooting conditions difficult. J,-Catto and G. Hay were top scorers, both reaching the handicap limit, 95. The Matthews button for top score off the rifle was won by J. Catto with 90. The spoony for range prizes were won by J, Catto, at 600 yards, with a scratch 48, and G. L. Todd, at 600 yards, with 47, including three points handicap. Cricket Playing in the Eastern Southland Wednesday ’ competition Gore B defeated Pukerau by a margin of 61 runs. The Gore team batted first, and scored 111 runs (J. Currie 37, W. Macara 14). F Edwards took five wickets for 29 runs and J. Edwards three for 28. Pukerau secured the small total of. 44 runs, J Edwards being top scorer with 17 runs. Several Gore bowlers shared honours. On the hostel grounds Gore A defeated Celtic B by a good margin of rune. The Gore team batted first, and declared, with 131 runs for eight wickets (R. Campbell 26, J. Horn 25). C. Martin took four wickets for 28 runs. Celtic B secured 82 runs. H. Hobbs being top scorer with 24.

Golf There was a large attendance for the closing of the Gore Ladies’ Golf Club on the Oroydon links on Wednesday despite the unpleasant conditions. A medal round was played over nine boles, the winner being Mrs A. D. Reid. Sub sequently, the players assembled in the pavilion when the captain (Mrs F. V Piper) officially declared the season closed, and presented the trophies. The prize list was as follows:—Club championship Miss K. Kirk: runner-up, Miss M. Rogers: B Grade championship, Miss Maher: runner-up. Miss Paterson: silver medai, four best A Grade Ladies’ Golf Union rounds, Miss Rogers; B Grade, Miss Oswin; ringer competition—A Grade. Miss Rogers; B Grade. Miss Paterson: Fisher Cup, for best aggregate. Miss Oswin; league competition, Misses Kirk and Rogers. A club presented by Mr Basil Smith was won bv Mrs T. Fyfe.
