GREEN ISLAND BOROUGH

MONTHLY COUNCIL MEETING The monthly meeting of the Green Island Borough Council was held last night and was attended by the Mayor (Mr J. Mahan) and Crs G. Orange, T. G. Tomkins, J..C. Russell, J. A. It. Brown, W. Dickinson and E. Hopewell. WORKS COMMITTEE. The Works Committee submitted the following recommendations: —That solicitors should be asked why instructions regarding the clearing of gorse had not been carried out, and advised that the council's instructions were to be carried out immediately. That the engineer should attend to the abutment, Kaikorai Stream bridge. That approval of the subdivision (Greenwood) of allotments 8/12, block 111, of Burnside, should be executed. j The report was adopted and the engineer was asked to make a comprehensi\ e report on the flooding of the main road near Harraway's mill. WATER AND LIGHTING. The report of the Water and lighting Committee contained the following recommendations: — That the city electrical engineer should be communicated with further in regard to lamp failures on the street lighting system. That all lighting installations should be held over until after March 31 nest. The report was adopted. ■' RESERVES COMMITTEE. The principal recommendations of the Reserves Committee were as follows: That the action of the chairman of reserves in purchasing plants and grass seed for the cenotaph should be endorsed. That the owners of cattle found wandering on streets should be advised that unless . the cattle were kept off streets the owners would be prosecuted. The report was adopted. FINANCE COMMITTEE. The Finance Committee, in its report, recommended that a meeting should be arranged with the inspector of fire brigades when in Dunedin to .discuss Fire Board matters. The .report was adopted and accounts amounting to £4573 3s 7d were passed for payment. DRAINAGE COMMITTEE. The Drainage Committee recommended that the contract for. the manufacture and delivery of penstock pipes and expansion joints with Messrs A. and T. Burt, Ltd., should be executed under seal.

The recommendation was adopted. CIVIC COMMITTEE. . The Civic Committee reported having met for the purpose of considering arrangements for the diamond jubilee of the borough this month. The following recommendations were submitted:—

That the tender of Stewart's Imperial Dance Band for the supply of music for the Civic Ball in the sum of £6 5s should be accepted;- that the date of the civic ball should be definitely fixed for November 22; that the Mayor. Cr W. 0. Smellie and Messrs T. Tomkins and J. L. Miller should be appointed a sub-committee to draw up a short history of the borough. The report was adopted. ENGINEER'S REPORT.^ The engineer (Mr F. J. Williams) reported as follows: Main Highways.—Dunedin-Invercargill: No work of any extent has been done to this highway since my last report. Financial authority has been received for the expenditure in terms of my previous reports. Contract papers for the repairs are in hand, and it is anticipated that tenders will be received at the next meet; ing of the council. Green Island-Taieri Mouth: No work of any sort has been done here during the month, but certain repairs to the tar-sealing will have to be carried out during the incoming month. Financial authority for expenditure on this road at the rate of £3 for £1 has been received.

Building Permits, —Application has been received from the Milburn Lime and; Cement Company for permission to build in concrete certain garages on their property at Burnside. The estimated cost is £BO.

Grader. —The grader has been hired to the New Zealand-Highway Constructors, Ltd. The hire was fixed at the rate of 29s per day, one day being allowed lor travelling. General Works. —Kaikorai Valley road has been scarified and graded and a small amount of metal and blinding used to repair the surface. In Thoreau street the gravel has been placed on the footpath from the junction of Mulford street to the school and a crossing made near Mulford street. A crossing has been put in the Main road for Mr Bosall. In Kirkland street a commencement was made with the concrete kerbing and channelling. In Xeill street gravel was spread on the old path, and a considerable amount of work was done on the permanent footpath on the northern side. Ashes were spread on Mr Eade's entrance in Binnie street. At the corner of Alexander street water tables were cleaned and the drainage work attended to.

Works in Hand.—Kerbing and channelling Kirkland street; kerbing and formation footpath, Neill street; footpath and channels, Upper Mulford street; etormwater, quarry road; abutment Kaikorai Stream bridge—Harraway's road; Teignmouth and Exmouth streets, regrading, etc.

Water and Lighting.—Since last report two services on the North Taieri road and two on the Slain road have been repaired. A stop cock in Shand street and leaking taps have received attention. The meter at the Iron Works was dismantled

and cleaned. It was found that a; large amount of sediment had collected in the dirt box. A leaking joint was repaired on the four-inch steel main at Sunnyvale. At Miller Park the water service was extended 80 yards towards the cricket pitches, and two hose taps were fitted and one bib tap. The Duddingstqn street main was fractured near Princes street by the operation of the Fire Board, and notification was sent to it to discontinue using the hydrant on the fire engine while worked by a wheel valve'. The wheel has since been removed, so that ho trouble should be experienced from this source. It was unfortunate that the break occurred, as it necessitated the closir.g down of the Iron Rolling Mills for a day. Cemetery and Reserves. —In the cemetery paths and plots have been attended to and three interments have been made. At the Cenotaph the scrub fence has been completed, trimmed, and all rubbish cleaned up. The necessary soil has been carted to Miller Park and the cricket pitches laid. The grass has been mown regularly. ' Sand has been carted for the' children's pits at Miller Park, and the timber surround will be put in during the month.
