THE WAITAKI DAM

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —"Inquiry" eeems to have hit the nail on the head when he says something should be heard of the dam through the press. It is now 12 months since the gates were dropped, and they are not sealed yet. I remember after the gates weie dropped one of the navvies suggested to one of the " heads " that if a few bales of loose wool or flock were dropped down they would be drawn into the cavity, and the curt reply was: "Do you think you know as much as the 'heads,' because your opinion is not wanted." It would be interesting to know what the whole job cost, as in 1929 a runholder was informed by the Public Works Department that Ins land would be under water in the early part of 1931. The dam was estimated to cost £3,000,000, "and was to be finished iu 1931 at that cost. What has it cost since? The coal bill and cement bill must have amounted to a considerable sum alone.—l am, etc., Ignoramus. Duntroon, November 4.
