From the beginning of last month a new high-speed steam train, the Silver Jubilee," was being operated by the London and North-eastern Railway between Newcastle and London. The train is timed to do the 268-mile journey m four hours, an average of 67 miles an hour. For this super train the railway company is following the American and Continental custom Of charging an extra fare, a practice which is almost unknown in Britain.
