ST. JOHN AMBULANCE

DUNEDIN CORPS ACTIVITIES FIRST-AID CHAMPIONSHIPS The competing teams from the various local ambulance and nursing division who took part in the Labour Day competitions at Timaru speak in high praise of the hospitality extended to them by the Timaru division. Cadet teams from Dunedin to the annual competitions at Christchurch enjoyed an excellent time, and, while not as successful as they might have been, nevertheless gained valuable experience.

For the first time in seven years Timaru was favoured with the St. John Ambulance Association's New Zealand championships, and these ■ were held in conjunction with the Main School gala on the school grounds. No fewer than 27 teams participated, representing more than 100 competitors. The weather was fine throughout the day, and this enabled all competitions to be held out of doors. The championships provided the association with a splendid opportunity to display to the public all branches of its work. The competitions <'ommenced early in the morning, and were continued throughout the day, and at all points where events were being staged there were groups of interested spectators. It was evident from the manner in which the officers, ranks, and nursing sisters went about their tasks that they had been efficiently trained, and there was revealed an exceptionally high standard. Through their competitions the-teams gave an insight into the methods adopted to meet all kinds of emergencies, from improvising splints from seemingly useless material to attending to victims of serious accidents. They went about their work quietly, but with all possible speed, having in mind the condition of the patient and the nature of the injuries being suffered. Those who were privileged to witness the demonstrations were greatly impressed with the work of the competitors, and there should result _ a sympathetic understanding of the activities of the association and its various branches. i

The officials controlling the championships were:—District Officer J. M. Dunne, Timaru; District Superintendent E. Gray, Kaiapoi; Divisional Superintendent E. Flawn, Dunedin; Divisional Superintendent J. L. Mowatt, Bluff; Divisional Superintendent C. E. Hooper, Timaru; LadySuperintendent Mrs A. L. Bishop, Christchurch ; Lady District Officer Mrs M. Cordey, Chrietchurch; Lady Superintendent Mrs Chapman, Invercargill; Lady Superintendent Mrs Wilson, Wellington; Lady Superintendent Mrs P. Youdale, Timaru; Lady Superintendent Mrs J. Shortland, Timaru Nursing Division; Lady Superintendent Mrs F. Lewis (reserve). Members of the local brigade acted as stewards. Messrs J. M. Dunne and W. Sutherland acted as timekeepers. The judges were: Corps Surgeon Dr F. F. A. Ulrich and Drs W. R. Fea, Benham, squad improvising; Drs G. H. Ussher and A. S. M'lnnes, individual improvising; transport, District Superintendent Gray; home nursing, Matron Lindsay. The prizes won during the competitions were presented at the ambulance hall by the Mayoress (Mrs T. W. Satterthwaite) during an interval in a function at which the visitors were entertained.

The district officer (Mr J. M. Dunne) said that it had been pleasing to be_ able to extend hospitality to so many visitors, and Timaru felt honoured at the .opportunity of staging one of the largest competitions of the kind held in the Dominion. The competitions had been particularly keen and there had been an extraordinary number of ties in the marking, especially in the individual sections. The Mayor welcomed the visitors and congratulated tbein on their enthusiasm in travelling long distances to take part in the competitions. Whatever the results might be he knew that they would be received by each competitor in a true sporting spirit. Mr Satterthwaite congratulated each member on the wonderful voluntary work that was being done by the St. John Ambulance Association throughout the Dominion, and spoke of the value of the knowledge they obtained. He trusted that the visitors would carry away many happy recollections of their stay in Timaru.

Dr F. F. A. Ulrich (divisional surgeon) spoke of the high standard of the big tests, which had been carried out on the English system. The system provided for an examination of the patient by the competitor, and questions which were not of a leading nature were answered by the doctor who was judging. Each little question was marked off, and the system was the best method he had ever met. Some of the competitors were not trained to meet the position, while others were, and this accounted for the difference in the marking. Mr Dunne also congratulated the winners on their success and hoped that Timaru would have the pleasure of again seeing the visitors at some future time. District Superintendent E. Gray (Kaiapoi) expressed appreciation on bohalf of the visitors to the Timaru Division and friends for the hospitality tnat had been extended. He congratulated the successful competitors and added that those who had not been successful had the satisfaction of knowing that they had given of their best. The competitions could not have been so successful had it not been for the co-ordination displayed by the local division, the arrangements having been splendid. On the call of District Superintendent Grav cheers were given for the Timaru Division, the compliment being acknowledged by Mr Dunne. The Mayor called for three cheers for the prize-winners, cheers being also given for the judges.
