MONTECILLO HOME
ANNUAL GARDEN PARTY The fine weather on Saturday afternoon assisted considerably in making the annual garden party at the Red Cross Homo at Montecillo the most successful function held there since the home was founded 18 years ago. The extensive grounds were at their best and the large crowd spent considerable time looking round the gardens and numerous congratulatory messages were received by members of the committee. The garden party is held each year for the purpose of raising funds to assist the disabled returned soldiers who arc inmates of the home, and samples of the work done by them during the year were on sale. These, which included various classes of leather work, basket work, toys and other articles, were all made under the direction of Miss Miller. In addition, there were this year stalls at which flowers, seedlings and cakes were on sale. Excellent business was done and the sum realised was very satisfactory. The official opening ceremony was performed by the president of the Dunedin Returned Soldiers’ Association (Mr A. Thomas), who said that when one looked back over the years since the war one could not help admiring the tenacity and firmness of purpose with wliich those who had been most unfortunate in the campaign had faced their problems. Sick or crippled, they had all packed up their troubles and had sought to find some sort of useful occupation for their time. Clear evidence of the success which had attended their efforts was given in the excellent workmanship displayed in the products offered for sale. He announced that the matron, Miss M'Millan, was about to retire for health reasons and said that the men in the home would miss her and her place would be hard to fill.
