PRIMARY SCHOOL SPORTS ANNUAL CHAMPIONSHIPS ELEVEN HUNDRED COMPETITORS Over 1000 children assembled at Logan Park on Saturday for the annual schools’ championship sports meeting conducted by the Otago State Primary Schools Sports Association. -The entries for the numerous events, which were run expeditiously off between 10.30 a.m. and 4. p.m.,'totalled nearly 2000, a considerable increase on last year, and the actual competitors’numbered 1100, being drawn from 43 schools, including a number which had not previously competed. While a great deal of interest was taken in the sports events by a large crowd of spectators, the most spectacular feature of the day, and one which was an undoubted credit to the organisers, was the display of massed marching and folk-dancing which took - place late in the afternoon. Nearly 2500 , children took part, and with tlve assistance of- the Forbury School Band and the Kaikorai School Bugle Band, they created, an effect of order and precision which evoked, unstinted applause from the spectators. The trophies competed for annually at this meeting are the'Athletic Shield, which is awarded to the school gaining most points in the sports events, and the Tabloid Cup, which goes to the school winning the tabloid event. St. Clair School added to an already distinguished record by carrying off the Athletic Shield by a substantial margin of points, and the Tabloid Cup- went to the Waitaki Boys Intermediate , School, which had. not previously entered a team at the meeting. An idea of the standard of performance shown at the meeting may be gained from the fact .that no fewer than tour records were broken during the day. J. Thompson (Forbury) clipped one-fifth ot a second from the previous record ot 11 4-ssec for the 100 Yards, boys under 14, both in his heat and the final, ihe record of 4ft 6Jin for the High Jump for boys under 14. which had stood for 13 .years, was eclipsed by D. bapstorcl ioc. Clair), who jumped 4ft Tin, and a teammate, H. M'Kenzie, put six inches on lo the existing record of 32ft Sin in the Hop, Step and Jump for boys under 13. The record of 7min Isec for the 50 Yards (girls under 10), was broken by two competitors. The best effort was that of D. Cockerill, or Musselburgh School, who did 6mi« 3sec in her heat and 6mm 4sec m the final, while S. Richardson, of Maori Hill, covered the distance in 7sec.
