RETIREMENT OF PRINCIPAL At the close of the meeting last Tuesday, members of St Margaret's College Council took the opportunity of expressing appreciation of the services of. the principal of the college, Miss Fairbairn, who is about to retire from active service. The chairman of the council, Mr J. M. Dick, said that although Miss Fairbairn -would not be leaving St. Margaret's for some few weeks the council wished to express at its meeting its appreciation of her services to St. Margaret's and the high esteem in which she was held, both on account of her professional work and her personal worth. ducted the affairs of the college with conspicuous ability and sympathetic understanding of the many problems that arise in all institutions where numbers of young people were gathered together. The council had reposed complete confidence in its principal and had not at any time had occasion to regret having done so. She had subordinated her own private interests to those of the college and the students in her charge, and she would leave with the council's warmest regard and its best wishes for many years of quiet and happy retirement. He asked her to accept an electric toaster as a mark of esteem. Mrs Benson, Messrs H. K. Wilkinson, "W. L. Craig and W. M'Hutcheson added their tributes to the remarks of the chairman and said they had always found their confidence in Miss Fairbairn amply justified. Miss Fairbairn, replying, thanked the members for their gift and said she had been inspired to give her best to the college by reason of the way in which she had always been met by the council, the confidence and co-operation of which she had always enjoyed. She would retire with some regrets, but felt the time had come when a younger woman should take charge.
