A DASH FOR AID

Details of a vessel's 300-miles dash to obtain medical aid were revealed when the steam trawler Ethel Taylor, belonging to Fleetwood, Lancashire, arrived in port recently. The Ethel Taylor, in charge of Skipper R. King, left Fleetwood on August 23 and steamed out into the Atlantic to the lonely Rockall fishing grounds. Fish livers were being boiled on board ship when the boiler exploded, and Frank Earl, a deckhand, of Shakespeare road, who was standing near, received scalds all over his body. Other fishermen rushed to his help, but he was so seriously injured that the skipper decided to abandon operations and make for Killybegs, Irish Free State, for medical aid. Another member of the crew, Frank Deegan, fireman, was also taken ill with severe internal pains. On arrival at Killybegs, Earl was sent to hospital immediately, while the doctor decided to detain Deegan ashore.
