Wisdom of the Years Every year produces experiences that contribute to a more profound appreciation of the important value of the correct use of fertilisers. In addition to the splendid work done by the Department of Agriculture, we now have a vast amount of knowledge based on the personal experiences of farmers who have extensively used " SUPER" over a number of years. With these sources of information available, Fertilising Recommendations are made with greater confidence than ever before. A particularly noteworthy feature with private reports is the success being, obtained by increasing the " amount-per-acre" of the " SUPER" applied. No doubt the increased residual fertility which follows an increase from 1-J-cwt to 2 and 3cwt is becoming recognised to a greater extent than formerly . . . and the value of fertilising in excess of the immediate crop's requirements, so as to increase the subsequent fertility of the soil, is being estimated in its real value. After all, the more you build up the fertility of your soil, the more it eventually returns you, and it is found that by increasing the " amount-per-acre " of " SUPER " applications, the " heart" of the soil is improved, humus is increased, in addition to correcting the natural deficiency of Phosphates in New Zealand soils. REVERTED PHOSPHATE Creating Increasing Interest Another feature of note is the success attending the increasing use of "Reverted Phosphate," and results have been equally satisfactory with Turnips, Rape, Grass, Wheat, Chou Mollier, and other crops. Turnip Crops, when grown with this low-priced ptoduct, have been protected during germination, and excellent strikes secured, followed by a long healthy growth of the crop. In many cases the growth was noted right into the Wintei months, and the feeding value thereby enhanced. Similar benefits have been secured by other varieties of crops and pastures, a special feature being the prolonged growing period. When comparing " Reverted Phosphate" with " Super" it is well to know that " Super " gives its correct response on soils with a high lime content. The action of the lime is to revert the "Super" to a citric soluble form required by plant life. If lime deficiency is known or suspected, a condition which will affect the necessary reversion of Super in the soil, Reverted Phosphate should be used, as Reverted Phosphate is Super already reverted in course of manufacture to the Citric Soluble form. Many soils in the South Island are deficient in Lime, and Reverted Phosphate is particularly suitable in these soils or in soils which contain excess iron; also in soils of southerly aspect, and those of a wet or acid nature. Reverted Phosphate is made by the addition of a calculated amount of Burnt Lime to 44/46 Super. The object of adding the Lime is to change the water soluble Phosphoric Acid to the Citric Soluble form, in which latter form, while not being soluble in pure water, the Phosphoric Acid is readily available to plants after being dissolved by soil waters. FARMERS ARE ADVISED TO CONTINUE WITH THEIR USUAL LIMING PROGRAMME when using " Reverted," as the Lime content in Reverted Phosphate does not take the place of a general liming programme. We recommend this line not only because of its suitability to the general soil conditions, but because of its low price. In other countries, notably Australia, to-day Manufacturers are charging from 15s to £1 more per ton for this Article than for Superphosphate, whereas the " Rockland " and "Aerex " varieties are the same price as Super. In many cases, for Turnips in particular, Reverted Phosphate is taking the place of the more highlypriced Turnip Mixtures. Reverted Phosphate is particularly suited for Turnip manuring in areas where Club Root is prevalent. As an Investment Superphosphate Reverted Phosphate Stand Unrivalled in all Branches of Agriculture They give returns of many hundreds per cent, on initial cost We recommend the utmost quantity of Reverted Phosphate or Special "Anti Club Root" Turnip Mixture through the front box of the ridger, and IJcwt. of either of these Fertilisers with the Seed. The recommendations are based on the experience of many of the best farmers in Otago and Southland, and have proved successful throughout. , ■ Note.—-Neither the "Anti Club Root" Turnip Mixture nor the Reverted Phosphate will cause germination injury to the Seed. Second Note.—ln order to minimise Club Root infection, farmers are urged to heavily lime their turnip land with 1 ton of burnt lime. Recommendation: 6cwt. of Special "Anti Club Root" Rape Mixture or Reverted Phosphate. Broadcast 3cwt. of this when cultivating or preparing the seed bed, and sow the balance of the Fertiliser with the seed. Rape and Grass, etc. Sow 3cwt. of Special "Anti Club Root'* Rape Mixture or Reverted Phosphate with the Rape Seed, and a further of Reverted Phosphate broadcast on the surface with the Grass: Seed. Again, in this instance, it is essential to treat the grass as a separate crop so far as the fertilising is concerned. There is no more prolific feeder than the Mangel. Recommendation; Work in lewt. of Kainit or Potash Salts together with 3cwt. of Super when cultivating. Sow a further 3cwt. of Mangel Mixture with the seed. Those who can afford to sow a heavier dressing are advised to do so. On account of the backward season and consequent shortage of grass, topdressing is still being carried out in many districts, and applications of 2cwt. per acre of Super on sheep pastures and 3cwt. per acre on cow paddocks can still be made with profit. The most advantageous season for the general topdressing programme Is in the late Summer and early Autumn, and our previous recommendations on this hold good. 2cwt. of Super per acre applied in the late Summer or early Autumn extends the Autumn growth well into the Winter, and assures an earlier growth in the Spring. At this period the grasses commence rerooting, and the application of the quickacting water-soluble Super gives vigour to the plant and increases the mineral content of the herbage. In many instances, where pastures have been adequately topdressed with Super in the early Autumn, the lambs have been entirely fattened without the aid of supplementary feed. Recommendation: 3cwt. of either Superphosphate or Ammoniated Super to the acre before closing the paddocks for hay. While our recommendations are not excessive, it can always be borne in mind that it is always far better to err on the side of over-manuring, as any Super not taken up by the immediate crop remains in the ground (Residual Fertility) to assist the growth of later crops.
