WEATHER IN OCTOBER

AVERAGE RAINFALL WARMER TEMPERATURES Warm temperatures, periods of bright sunshine, and an average rainfall were the outstanding features of the wottther experienced in Duncdin during the month of October. The conditions at all times were in keeping with the second month of spring. During the first 12 days of the month the average daily sunshine was six hours. No rain fell during that period. The first sign of rain came on October 13, and between that date and October 10 the total fall was .43 inches. The wettest period was between Octobc 22 and October 27, when 1.84 inches of rain fell. The heaviest fall was .86 inches on Oetober 24, and the second heaviest .62 inches on October 23. Daily sunshine was recorded from Ootobcr 28 to the last day of the month. The total rainfall for the month, as registered by the gauge on th« roof of. the Otago Daily Times building, was 2.27 inches, which was .46 inches more than the rainfall for October last, year, and 1.27 inches more than the fall for September this year. The average daily .maximum temperature for October was 59 degrees, which was about six degrees higher than that for September. High temperatures were recorded at various periods, especially during the first two weeks of the month. The highest temperature recorded was 75 degrees, on October 2, the second highest, 74 degrees, on October 9, and the third highest, 72 degrees, on October 18. The thermometer registered 71 degrees on October 1, while the temperature was between 55 degrees and 65 degrees on 18 days. The lowest temperature was 30 degrees, registered on October 20. Other low temperatures were 38 degrees on October 19 and 25, and 40 degrees on October 3, 14, 23 and 24. The average minimum temperature for the month was 44 degrees. BAROMETER READINGS.

The barometer readings for the most part were below the 30.00 mark during the month. For the first seven days the readings were between 29.55 and 30.05, but the pressure increased on October 8 and 9, the barometer registering 30.26 on the former date. This was the highest reading for the month. After falling to 29.85 on October 10, the barometer rose to 30.00 24 hours later, when another low pressure was recorded, the barometer falling rapidly until it registered 2,0.49 on the night of October 13. The pressure then increased until the barometer recorded 30,05 on the morning of October 17. A sharp fall was noticeable on the night of October 18, when the reading was 29.75. The pressure again increased on October 19 and 20, the barometer registering 30.15 at midnight on the latter date. The barometer commenced to fall again on October 22, and continued to fall during the next 30 hours, the reading on the night of October 24 being -29.37. Again the pressure increased, the barometer soaring until it registered 20.69 at midnight on October 27. The pressure fell rapidly on October 28, the reading at midnight on that date being 29.39. The barometer had a vising tendency on the last day of the month, registering 29.95 last evening. SUNSHINE IN OCTOBER. The total amount of sunshine for October, as registered on the sundial on the roof of the Otago Daily Times building, was 10G hours 16 minutes, compared with 207 hours 29 minutes in September, 138 hours 35 minutes in August, and 207 hours 10 minutes in October last year. The longest periods of daily sunshine were 14 hours 12 minutes on October 30, 12 hours 42 minutes on October 28, 12 hours 30 minutes on October 18, 12 hours 20 minutes on October 4, 12 hours 5 minutes on October 17, 10 hours 5 minutes on October 20, 10 hours 4 minutes on October 5, and 9 hours 15 minutes on October I. The shortest periods of sunshine were 22 minutes on October 14, 25 minutes on October 10, 55 minutes on October 11, 56 minutes on October 19, 58 minutes on October 22; and 1 hour 25 minutes on October 27. On five days no sunshine was recorded.
