A check in the decline of the birthrate —rather rare elsewhere—the highest marriage figures since 1921 and the lowest death and: infantile mortality rates are the principal features of a recent report of the Registrar-general for Scotland. Births numbered 88.836. being 2290 more than in the previous year, and representing a rate of 18 per 1000, against 17.6. Marriages totalled 36,949, compared with 34.201 in 1933. Deaths from all causes totalled 63,741, being 1107 fewer than in the previous year. The rate, 12.92 per 1000, was 0.68 below the average for the preceding five years. Twelve out of every 100 deaths were due to malignant disease.
