WOMEN’S DIVISION N.Z. FARMERS’ UNION

Reports of meetings of branches are requested, but they should be furnished promptly, for the publication of reports that are not supplied within a week from the date of the meeting cannot be assured. The Waihola branch of the W.D.F.U. met on Wednesday, Miss Paterson taking the chair. The roll call was “ Kitchen hints.” Birthday arrangements were carried out. The competition was won by Mrs Bungard, “A Smock.” The hostesses were Miss Paterson and Mrs M'Carthy. At the meeting of the Maheno-lucholme-Kauru Hill branch Mrs Marshall presided. Motions of sympathy were passed with Mi’s Currie and the relatives of Miss Dippie in their bereavements. Mrs Perry gave a demonstration on “Making Silk Lamp Shades,” and was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. * * * When the Tapanui branch met Mrs Kane presided. The girls who represented the branch at the educational week in Dunedin gave a talk on their lectures, places visited, and entertainments. Misses Potts and Eskdale were hostesses. ❖ * * The Palmerston branch met on Friday in the Centra] Hotel, Mrs Ross presiding. It was decided to send £5 to community chest, £1 to cancer campaign, £1 to hydatid fund, os to leper fund, and 5s towards bush nurse. The roll call was, “The Name of a Famous Woman.” The programme for the evening was arranged by Mrs Galloway and Mrs Field, and was as follows; —A recitation by Miss Moodie, an account of her travels in Scotland by Miss Stenhouse, and a competition, won by Miss Moodie. The hostesses were Mesdames Boss and T. Sheat and Misses Ballingal] and F. Boss. -I- -t The Omarama branch meeting was presided over by Mrs Cambridge (the president). The roll call was, “A Quotation from Shakespeare,” after which a short talk on the life of Shakespeare was given by Mrs Cambridge. The competition was, “The best frock costing not more than 10s, to be worn by the maker,” and was won by Mrs D. Taylor, with Mrs H, Wardell and Miss L. Collins second and Mrs Sanders, Mrs M'Aughtrie, Miss Cameron, and Miss M. Appleby third. A report on educational week in Dunedin was given by Miss M. Appleby, who was sent as the representative from Omarama. * * * • The Cromwell branch mot in the Anglican Hall on Thursday, October 24, %vhen Mrs T. Smith presided. A successful dance was held during the month. It was decided that the branch held a produce stall in aid of the health camps. Owing to its being the last meeting of the year, members took the opportunity of presenting the president, with a shopping basket. Miss Kathleen Heggic, delegate to the Country Girls’ Week, gave a report. Miss Kathleen Smith was unable to be present, A travel, talk was given by the Bev. D. Heggic. Hostesses were Mrs R. E. Lawless and Miss Evelyn Smith.

The fifth birthday party of the Alexandra branch was celebrated in the Town Hall on Thursday, October 24. A true party spirit was very evident, members and guests numbering over 300. The stage was decorated and set out as a drawing room, where the non-dancers could view the revelries. The president (Mrs J. H. Timmings) welcomed the guests and kept the proceedings moving gaily. Novelty dances had been arranged, and prizes were won by Mr and Mrs Charles (Omakau). Items were rendered by Mrs J. Noble, Miss Ramsay, Mr Munro, and Mr A. Cleary. The iced birthday cake was piped in. The president headed the procession, followed by the piper (Mr Allan Ross), then came a gaily-de/corated wheelbarrow, on which was seated the secretary holding the cake and wheeled by one of the members. The rest of the members, in gay paper hats, followed. After a gay march round the hall, members formed into lines and danced the Highland fling. At the conclusion, the president and secretary were presented with bouquets. Mrs Annan (president of the Clyde branch) was called on to ligiit the candles. Mrs Attfiejd (president of Galloway branch) blew out the candles, and Mrs Charles (president of Omahau) cut the cake. Birthday greetings and good wishes were extended to the branch by Mrs Annan (Clyde), Mrs Attfield (Galloway), Mrs Charles (Omakau), Mr Bringans (Mayor of Alexandra), Mr E. J. Iversen (president of the Farmers' Union), and Mr W. Cummock (president Young Farmers' Club). An adjournment was then made io the supper room, which was decorated with streamers and bowls of tuliDS. Before the singing of "Auld Lang Syne," the president paid a tribute to her energetic committee, and thanked the members for their loyalty, also all those who had contributed to the evenr ing's enjoyment.
